If healthy the secondary will have a good many ball-hawks lurking back there. I have always liked Bailey, now I like him even more.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Hope he can stay healthy and contribute. I think he could still be decent in man-to-man coverage.

"CB Champ Bailey’s 2-year deal in New Orleans can be worth as much as $7M, source says. The #Saints have given him some guaranteed money"

Hope he can add some more of these to his highlight reel while wearing the Black & Gold!

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Said it before, I'll say it again, Champ Bailey is still better then Greer, White, and Robinson right now at this stage in his career. He was hurt all last year. And the year before that he still had a pretty great year. It wasn't the epic Champ Bailey of old, but it was equivalent too or better than the year Lewis just had. I'm all for the youth movement, but this still is a good signing

And it's not the only injury Denver's dealing with -- Champ Bailey also has a foot sprain, the team announced on Sunday.

Bailey's injury appears to be worse -- NFL.com reports that the Pro Bowl cornerback is dealing with a "serious" type of sprain and that he "faces a recovery timeline of several weeks."

Champ told the Denver Post that he suffered the sprain during Saturday night's loss to the Seahawks when a Seattle player pushed his foot off of Bailey's.

Wes Welker has ankle sprain, Champ Bailey has foot sprain - CBSSports.com
This also may help plain why he looked awful last year...

Chris XVI agreed but I'll add to your thoughts...

We have a solid front 4, 2 YOUNG gifts at DE bringing pressure, add a solid SS in Vacarro, ball hawk @ FS in JByrd and a strong #1 corner in KLewis. Champ is older but he has TON of support to be good. What helps out a secondary? ... A strong pass rush.

Baring any major injuries the Saints are gonna be a scary defense in 2014. Bailey won't have to be great ...just good.

This could be the year to bring that prize back to New Orleans.

Greatest Saints secondary ever (on paper)?

People say he's washed up and looked awful last season, the vikings said the same thing when we signed Darren Sharper.....just saying

In 2013, the 6-0, 192 pounder appeared in five regular season games with three starts for the Broncos as he missed 11 games with a foot injury. He posted 14 tackles (12 solo) and three passes defensed. He appeared in all three postseason games for Denver with two starts, including Super Bowl XLVII and recorded 11 solo tackles.
Apparently his foot was feeling better in the Super-bowl... Looks like we have a secondary great at tackling now :bng:

EDIT: May have read that wrong, 11 solo tackles in 2 games not the superbowl

Saints sign CB Champ Bailey (2 years, $7 million): A- Grade
This is a very good signing. Sure, Champ Bailey struggled this past season and was torched in a playoff loss the preceding January, but he was pretty banged up in 2013. He's capable of rebounding and playing like a solid No. 2 cornerback at the very least, though it's almost certain that we'll never see the old Bailey again.

Of course, there's a chance that Bailey will continue to struggle. If so, who cares? The Saints gave him a pretty small contract worth $7 million over two seasons, so they're not risking very much. This is a savvy move for a team trying hard to win now.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

I think he's got a couple year's gas left...

But even if he never steps on the field, having a guy like that around all the talented young players we have on the back end...that alone validates his salary IMO.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

I can't help but feel since he was in town for several days that the Saints took a really close look at his ankle and his overall health in general.

The contract looks to average 3 million, we're were 2 million under, will gain 1.4 million losing Bush, so I guess we're about a 1/2 million under now

Love this signing! We need some veteran influence in the locker room and Champ has a ton of respect from the younger players. Even if his performance is less than his "prime years", he provides the team with great value as a mentor and a leader.

Not really, they just didn't think he was worth the money he was looking for.

They would've liked to keep Sharper, but he was a "casualty" of the annual value vs cost debate every single FO has to go through in the offseason when evaluating their roster.

It certainly did work out in Sharper's and the Saints' favor. :-)

The First Quarter Pick 6? Yeah, Vacarro just jumped the seam route and took it back...

...uh, well, the Second Quarter Pick 6? Byrd slipped underneath the post route like he's always done and...

...oh, the Fourth Quarter Pick 6? Sorry, I've lost track, Bailey came in with the second wave of backs and just snatch the out route and ran it back...

Mike? Mike? MIKE!?! Get Me Outta Here...

How time flies ... if I'm not mistaken he was the guy the Redskins took when we traded our draft to get Ricky. If I remember right a lot of us fans were hoping the Saints could get Bailey, but Ditka had other ideas. Better late than never, eh? :)

Just think of the players we could have drafted if not for Ditka and the Williams trade...

At the very least a solid #2. Makes the draft really interesting... maybe take a WR in the first now... or maybe an OLB... or we could still take a CB and have Bailey tutor him.

I almost hope it's the best WR possible :bng:

with BYRD helping it gives less responsibility to Bailey....notice when we had sharper Porter looked like a stud....same here except a lot of knowledge is on the field

Thank you John Kasay!

"He also knew that another of Reale’s clients — kicker John Kasay, who like Bailey went to the University of Georgia — was in New Orleans for the final season of his 20-year NFL career in 2011, the last time the Saints won the NFC South.

Reached by phone, Kasay on Friday said he was effusive to Reale about how rewarding it was to close his career with the Saints.

“It was a very good situation,” Kasay said. “I couldn’t have gone to a better place. ... They could not have treated me better.”

Reale passed on Kasay’s recommendation to Bailey, and that was “a big factor,” the agent said.

Man, I really hope I am wrong about this signing.
Seems like a lot of money tied up in a maybe, but I guess the medical staff, SP and Loomis are sold

Going go need some restructuring if we are going to get Graham anything close to what he wants

In all likelihood, if a long-term contract is reached with Graham this offseason, the initial salary cap hits for the first years of the contract will be lower than what his tag is at the moment.

So, in other words, signing a long-term contract with Graham would free up more cap space for the Saints to use now while pushing back his "fat years" into the future where increased salary caps and restructures reside.

If Bailey does enough to complete the deal $3.5ml is a snip. Tracey Porter is earning $3ml this year.

The Redskins made a very bad deal with Porter, in fact their whole offseason has been poor

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

I agree
If we get the Bailey of two years ago its a great deal. With the Broncos issues with Von Miller suspension and loosing Dummerville added to Bailey carrying a injury id put my money on Bailey being closer to the player he was in 2012 than 2013.

I'm excited to see what effect Champ and Lewis have on White and Robinson. White and Robinson in their 2nd year under Ryan should improve both, combined with the veteran savvy of Champ and Keenan.
Both have flashed some great play along with a few WTF moments.
Hopefully they play a bit smarter and more consistent.
