#Saints have agreed to 2-year deal with CB Champ Bailey, per source.

Cornerback Champ Bailey will be joining the New Orleans Saints roster.

WWL Saints Sideline Reporter Kristian Garic confirms the team and the defensive back have agreed on a two-year deal.
Garic says it is a smart move by the Saints.

"Bailey, has played in the league for 15 years, and while his best football might be behind him, he's still a valuable player to a young defensive secondary. He'll fit right in with Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan's pressing defense. Realistically I think the Saints will carve out a specific role for Bailey in the nickel defense," our sideline reporter said.

Garic also likes the way things are shaping up for the Saints in the NFL Draft.

Happy with that.
Vaccaro, Byrd, Lewis and Bailey should lead to loads of interceptions. Id love to see a good CB or Mosley in the draft to round off a stunning backfield

I like the move assuming we got him for the right price. He will at the very least help coach up any young CBs we get in the draft and might even have a Sharper type effect. I think he is still better than average.
Without all the rape of course.

At 35 is he still able to start or is this just a mentor/depth move?

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

lol I wonder how in the hell he is going to pull the money out of his ass to sign Jimmy? Assuming he really plans to sign Jimmy. The way the team is moving this offseason I would not be totally shocked to see a draft day trade.

Grahams tag salary is already factored in; my guess is that he plays under the tag this year and gets a deal done next year when the cap goes up...

Yep, I just heard the news on Sirius NFL radio. I think its a good move, maybe the change of scenery will put some gas back in the ol tank. Its happened before so maybe lightning will strike twice.

Or he gets a deal done this year that is cap friendly for this year. They can easily structure a deal with a solid signing bonus that would hit this year's cap far less than the $7M tag figure.

I don't know what to think about this. I just hope we draft CB (even later rounds)

Can't trust Bailey, age, injuries...

It doesn't matter whether you trust him or not. It only matters that Payton and Loomis do.

;)

Badaboommm! Seattle D has a competitor now.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

I like it. His smarts and technique should allow Him to remain effective 15 yards inward. With Byrd and Vacarro covering the backend, any lost of speed he's incurred should be masked on vertical routes. If he's our starting nickel covering slot receivers, that's something we're not even going to game plan for.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Dont forget that Bush's tender wonr be getting paid.

ClintSaints 04-04-2014 02:56 PM

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Some of you are forgetting he missed a TON of games last year. Like half the season or more. Actually, I just looked it up, he only played 5 games last year.

I'd rather have Jabari Greer back, provided that he's healthy.

But having said all this, I hope Champ Bailey rocks! Sort of like he-who-must-not-be-named rocked when we signed him as a free agent in '09. You know what I mean.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

He's washed up but he's also one of the best CB's of all time so I guess it can't hurt to have him for depth. His invaluable knowledge will be the most useful part.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Something tells me he will either be our nickel corner or play 3rd safety in Rob's 3 safety sets

He's not what he used to be, but that does not mean he is "washed up".

If this means we can't afford to sign Rafael Bush now then I'm really opposed to it.

In Ryan I trust. lol

Minimize Champ's weaknesses and use his strenghts. (Rob proved that he is quite good at it)

We will. They know he is not a long term solution. They probably brought him in as much for his knowledge as much as whatever talent he has left.
He will be good for all our QBs

Lookem up again.

Played in games:
6
7
12
15
16
17
18
19

I count 8, thats 3 more in a season than Joe Morgan has played in in the last 3 years.

Dont agree myself
The team obviously put a value on what they were willing to pay Bush. Had they really neen desperate to keep him and felt he was worth more they would have tendered him at round two level for 700k more.

There was never any chance of bringing Bush back once he signed the offer sheet with Atlanta.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

I like the move. Adds depth and knowledge. I still think we need to add one more CB in the draft. Having Byrd, lewis and champ teaching a young CB is a good thing.

Slowly but surely we're plugging the holes. Now we just need to address receiver, oline and add some speed at linebacker. I like where we're headed this offseason.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

So, basically he could have an instant impact or just be an expensive coach. Either way I'm down with the signing.:bng:

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

Not opposed to this signing at all... I didn't see many Denver games this past season (or two), so I don't really know how effective of a player Bailey still is.

But if RR, SP and ML thought he was worth bringing in and giving him a 2-year contract - then I can't help but to think that he still has some worth as an on-the-field DB.

Bailey was released by the Denver Broncos earlier this offseason because of a lofty price tag and declining production. But the 12-time Pro Bowler is said to be healthy after being plagued by a foot injury last season, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported earlier this week.
Thats encouraging, because he looked awful last year.

He actually had a great 2012 season, so he isn't far removed from greatness.

And he rested a lot last year. So he should be fairly darn healthy.

Re: Saints sign Champ Bailey

The no pass rush denver had didnt help either. With our dynamic duo in the front seven Champ will be really solid if he is healthy. Trust in Loomis.

I hope Champ looked into how this is going to affect his social security checks.
