Saints mailbag: Money left for Graham
@MikeTriplett: First of all, it’s important to note the Saints still have enough room to sign Graham to a long-term contract even with all of the recent deals they’ve made. Graham is currently counting $7.035 million against the Saints’ cap, which is the amount of the franchise-tag qualifying offer the Saints made him. They can easily keep his 2014 salary-cap cost at that rate or lower -- even if they sign him to a deal worth more than $10 million per year.
Secondly, I think New Orleans should absolutely keep Graham. (Remember, no team has offered the Saints two first-round draft picks for him. That’s just what it would cost another team if they signed him away under the franchise-tag rules. But it seems highly unlikely that a team would pay that price.) I understand what Carl is saying about the way Payton’s offense has thrived despite being loaded with superstar-caliber players. But superstars do even better in Payton’s offense. Payton thrives on creating and exploiting mismatches, and Graham is the ultimate mismatch. That’s why he has led the NFL with 36 touchdown catches over the past three years. Graham’s numbers over that stretch have been sensational (270 catches, 3,507 yards). A replacement wouldn’t get anywhere near that level of production, even in Payton’s offense. Re: Saints mailbag: Money left for Graham
The hilarious thing is once we do sign him to a long-term deal we're likely to clear some more cap room and sign another free agent or two.
