Give me a break. Just because you haven't heard of him doesn't mean he can't be a good football player.

ranked 900 and something... ya think they could have landed him UDFA???

Ranked 900 to who? Some website like CBSsports or NFLdraftscout?

NFL teams don't go off of websites like that. If they did, any random person with a working internet could run a team's draft.

Re: Grade Our Draft!

I grade the draft a B only because with the last pick, the OT isn't considered to be a really good fit. He's too small to play swing tackle and I don't know if he's strong enough to play OG. The others are capable of playing where needed.

CheramieIII 05-10-2014 08:28 PM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

I VOTED B. We addressed all necessary areas with overkill in some. We only have a center/OG to pickup and we might get that from an undrafted FA or Veteran FA all of those players that were drafted will make at least the PS and Cooks, Jean-Baptiste and the LB from Cal will make the 53 man roster and maybe the OT too.

That might have been an improvement this year. On some things Payton and Loomis are head of the class. Salary cap and late round picks have been their specialty. However at first glance this years draft is a real head scrathcher. Who knows, maybe they hit a homerun, but if they did they disguised it very well.

yeah well that must have happened to the Saints... as pointed out the Saintsations must have been running the draft at that point.

C

no center. No dt.

didn't think that there was a great deal of talent out there to begin with.

Re: Grade Our Draft!

I gave it a B. I think the Cooks move was spectacular and SJP was darned good too. The rest of the picks, we'll just have to wait and see how they pan out. I'm happy in that I don't think we reached for anyone.

Re: Grade Our Draft!

B or B-, love the Cooks pick up and I like the LBs we got. I don't know if you can really consider anyone taken at the end of the 6th a reach, but I'm not sure about Rooks/ I really would have liked to land Deandre Coleman.

frankeefrank 05-10-2014 11:50 PM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

I voted A, for two reasons.
1. I think the talent they got in the first and second round are immediate "contributors." They are also guys that fit our team dynamic.
Good citizens, with a knack for making big plays.
2. I think everyone (maybe save the OT from KSU) makes the roster.
We got younger and a little more depth.

I really like Sunseri, but only because I think he is a smart player, who also is blessed with uncanny instincts. He also comes off as a guy that will work his ass off. Those are great intangibles to have in pro football.

FinSaint 05-11-2014 04:59 AM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

In a vacuum I probably wouldn't have liked it as much, but when combined with the moves the Saints have made this offseason, I'd grade it a solid B.

A center would've been nice, but there's certainly a possibility that this draft haul turns out to be full of starters in a couple of years time.

brees84 05-11-2014 07:04 AM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

B

We don't have many holes and we decided to gamble a little with some picks. Injury concerns on one side, high upside on other (later rounds).
Round 1-2, grade A+. Cooks will be superstar in this league. In our system with coach Payton and Drew - sky is the limit. Baptiste may not be intermediate starter but few years from now we can have helluva cornerback.
4,5,6 grade C. If we can get 1-2 starters from those rounds in next couple of years, then it was worth it.

Marlboro Man 05-11-2014 07:31 AM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

C. Cooks and SJB. The rest.....meh. From what I see so far and I hope I'm wrong, one of the worst drafts in the SP era.

TheOak 05-11-2014 08:11 AM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

For a Saints draft B+ overall. To me, there are a few projects and 2 possible starters. They make cupcakes of cr4p a large % of the time.

A lot of people wanted 15 picks ..... That's what you do when you went 4-12 and 1/2 your team are on 9+ years in the NFL. We went 11-5 gutted dead weight and picked up a few starters via free agency and the draft.

If this were Atlanta's draft id give it a C because of what they can't do with projects and talent.

2013 draft was graded C+ to B-. After the season was over it was better than that.

Re: Grade Our Draft!

lmao 15 picks is what seattle and the niners had and they managed just fine.

It is just not our style that all. i gave up on the saints dancing around the draft board years ago.

If there was a draft to play games in this was it.

We could have added so much more talent to this team. oh well it aint our style.

Loomis and Payton aren't in it to "play games". That was fans do. They are in it to improve the team. The draft isn't a game to them as it is to many of us. It is their job.

Not trying to play politics but there were many good points brought up. We made some great picks IMO, some OK picks with huge upside IMO, and a final dud IMO.
Lots to love, a few not so lovable. B minus, C plus IMO

Re: Grade Our Draft!

-Cooks would not have been my choice, but he's a darn good player and fills a definite need. He will be a playmaker.
-Jean-Baptiste is a shutdown/playmaking CB the Saints needed.
-Fortt was a reach at best with lots of other talent on the board. He has no where to go but up and hopefully will suprise.
-Sunseri is a great pick. He's better than Bush and if he's healthy will take over Vaccaro's role in Ryans's 3 safety scheme. Plus, Vaccaro is coming off two concussions and a season ending injury.
-Powell has talent and plays with a mean streak. The Saints need someone to step up at LB. He will get his shot.
-Rooks is another reach and will never play a down for the Saints. Wasted pick with lots of talent available at other positions. If you're going to take a flyer on someone, how about a kicker?

The two playmakers at the top earn the Saints a B+. Sunseri and Powell bump it up to an A-.

We won't know how SF or Seattle managed until the end of the season.

SF gathers and then sheds.... Look at Nnamdi. Now people wish we drafted like them, then people wished we did free agency like them... On 17th of November 2013 we best them.

Is Seattle that much better than the Saints? Only at home. They are not that much of a better team if they are not in the Clink.

Simple question, you turn 6 into 12, who are you cutting to make room? Have you looked at the depth chart? We are over already.

At some point every mater piece painted looks just like crap, every mansion looks like a slab, every super model looks awkward.
I'll get upset if this draft and free agency leaves us 4-12 at the end of 2014.....

Critiquing Payton and Loomis while they work before the first preseason is unfair, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Or should I dig into this sites archives and show what was thought of Moore, Brees, Colton when they were brought on?

You can also bring out the saved history on Sedrick Ellis, Robert Meachem, Jason David, Shaun Rogers, Curtis Lofton, Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper...

On second thought, don't bring up Harper, the servers may explode...

Don't come here to sing Kumbaya on a BBS, nor drink the coolaid...

Discussing, Arguing in a friendly banter and discourse is what this online community is all about...

And as great a Coach we have, he has his flaws, in regards to personnel - an example is his man-crushes on players (which I am as guilty of as well)...

Only Issue that concerns me is whether Loomis has the backbone to reign Payton in and to make shrewd drafts and moves without overpaying - as we did with the likes of Will Smith and Roman Harper with their departure, role reduction coinciding with a resurgence in the Saints defense...

They get the privilege and salary for running the Saints - with that comes great responsibility and the headache of hearing from paying fans who may have as a perspective that's valid...

I'm fully aware of how this community functions, just one piece of it is is the ability to sing kumbaya or drink coolaid if a member cares to, just like the same member can come and ***** and moan because something didn't go their way. If you don't mind refraining from telling me and other members what they shouldn't "come here to sing", I know I'd appreciate it. If you came looking for a rochambeau I'm your huckleberry..... We can kick each other in the nutz all day long.

Loomis reigning in? You mean like he did with Haslet? Sean Payton is our bread and butter, not Loomis.

As far as the last paragraph, perhaps if you feel you've bought time with Loomis's ear you should schedule a meeting and take advantage of that investment. Last I checked you'll not find him here, so that's a relatively straw argument. If you purchase a game ticket you've paid to watch the game, not make demands of the management tree.

Neither a purchase nor a donation entitle a person to decide how things should be run.

Since I'm drinking and singing..... Your saying we are worse than 11-5 next season?

Is it really that bad? When you look at out roster do you see 4-12 or something close to it?

FinSaint 05-11-2014 02:16 PM

Re: Grade Our Draft!

Any way you look at it the draft is a crapshoot, and there's no such thing as a guaranteed pick. So, ML and SP decided to make some risky picks this year around, which does make the likelihood of all of the picks panning out somewhat more unlikely. But if they do hit gold with some of these guys, they'll be hailed as masterminds.

So, all in all, it's a good move by them since most are not expecting much from these lower picks, and they can always point to the injuries as one of the reasons why they didn't deliver as expected.

Not this coming year as we already have the talent we need.... for the most part. Our true deficiency last year (and looking like this year) was on the OL, and I don't see any improvement on that. Most of Drew's picks came from him being hurried and that was from an insufficiency at the center spot not to mention a lack of choices in the tackle spots as well. We've lost Kromer and I didn't see Ingalls as being any kind of equal to him. Even if he is, he needs some material to work with. We are easily a knockdown, a hurry, a sack or a pick away from a Superbowl.

Don't really like La Bust either at second. He was kind of like a Brady Quinn. Looked really good against lower level teams, but you don't see many in the way of highlights when he played against the two good teams.

I will be happy to be proven wrong, very happy, but...

Lelito - We don't know yet, all e can so is trust for now and wait and see.

Armstead - Played better than Chuck no? Played a good bit better in the end and playoffs, no?

So far unless your disagreeing we've gotten better... At very worst stayed equal.

I 1/2 agree with you on Drew's passing issues. The other 1/2 was WRs not getting separation, Stills really came along at the end and Cooks should be able to do at least as well.

4th ranked defense. Are we worse anywhere?

Didn't think so.

O-Line issues running first 1/2 of the season was the o-line adjusting to the new blocking scheme. Got better in the end and playoffs.

Special Teams - Who knows, not caring now. I still see that as a coaching issue.

So..... We lost Sproles. Loss of talent.... But became a worse team? I'm not so sure, id go with less predictable and that's is what everyone has wanted.

Lost Moore? Replaced him with worse?

So you see, I don't get it. If it's not this coming year then we will have another free agency period and draft before each season after.

You grade drafts based on the potential and quality of players you picked, not on whether they addressed some perceived need.
Don't knock the players we picked just because they don't play Center.

Coach Payton already said there were only a hand full of Centers and their value didn't align with our draft picks.

Reach for a Center and the parade starts lining up, reach for a WR and here come the fire and brimstone.
