Can we discuss the Playbook now that the Draft is done and over?
Sean and company have to do something with the playbook it really needs a few new wrinkles. The Screen, Run, Go Deep or The Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy play calling is getting pretty predictable. I don't think there has been any changes to it since Payton and Drew have been here I'm not saying we need to scrap the playbook but how about adding to it with some new plays .I don't know but for all the credit Sean has gotten for being a offensive Guru it seems like the same thing year after year. I'd like to see alitte more big boy ball smash mouth if you will. we are going to be playing these really physical teams in the playoffs assuming we get back there and I fully expect that to be the case I'm just not so sold of the finesse type team is the way to beat the bully on the block . Dad always said the way to stop the bully from picking on ya is to Punch'em in the mouth and that's exactly what I want this team to do to the Seattle's and San Fran's of the NFC.
What's your take on this subject? |
Re: Can we discuss the Playbook now that the Draft is done and over?
Being Sean is a former QB himself and Brees has been our best offensive weapon since '06; I don't see Payton getting away from his vertical offense. Smash Mouth football is what you play when you have a game manager as a QB; Alex Smith for example.
We are what we are until Payton or Drew retires, that's the way I see it. |

For starters I'm not ready to question Sean Payton...
Actually that's all I have to say. |
Re: Can we discuss the Playbook now that the Draft is done and over?
I'm not trying to start any big dust up or saying I'm unhappy with the coach or team.I'm just trying to have a discussion on something different that we talk about all the time like whats our record gonna be, who we want to sign, poll this or that,Etc

Cooks will open up lots of new plays. With him having the abilty to make a LB miss and go 60 yards, Stills and Morgan over the top and Graham/Colston a miss match every play im hopeful the offense gets that spark thats been missing the past two years. The run game will be important and if they can play as they did in the playoffs then we look in good shape.

Besides more commitment to the run game, I would like to see more deep throws. We may raise the risk of getting picked, but I think it will help back the defense off our nutz a little. Of course that all depends on how much time Drew gets, but I think if we can do that, combined with the run game,we shouldn't have to change the play book too much. Whats the point of getting all that wr speed if you dont use it.I wouldn't mind seeing some trick plays a little more to keep the other teams guessing(fake punts, double reverse, flea flicker, wild cat, etc).

Re: Can we discuss the Playbook now that the Draft is done and over?
i do not see the play book changing all that much really. offensively we swapped on piece for another and added nothing else.
just look for more passes to the slot than last year which was a down year for the position. |

I called it last season that we would see a change of the playbill this season.
Sean writes the book to try and fit the skillsets of his weapons, not vice-versa. Anyone think our TE would have as many targets if he wasn't Jimmy Graham? Sproles is gone, need to make a shift to more running with RBs and less passing. As unpopular as it is I do agree that the 500 ton gorilla in the room is Drew's arm. The additions of Stills and Cooks's speed our 50 yard deep routes need to be 40s with some angle built into them. The separation they will get and their burst after the catch will more than makeup for the shorter route. The line for our screen game needs to prove it can gel and pull it off before we go back to being a heavy screen team. Change is coming. Brace your selves. |

Lots of great plays in there, it's just time for Sean to buy a randomizer.

Im >>>>>assuming <<<< (there's that word again, it means more than likely im wrong) you are saying you want Shawn to be more smashmouth with the play calling. You can't change to a smash mouth team if you pass on a Center, OT..... and a running back who will help you do that. All he did was change out the OW..... again and it's back to business as usual. See you in the playoffs... |

Has it moved to the iPad yet? Or is it still a book with horse hair binding?

Random doesn't help when personnel give it away. You can rewrite the playbook just by changing the personnel packages associated with it. With your blocking TE in, PT in the back field, and Henderson in... What are the odds a screen is coming? |
Re: Can we discuss the Playbook now that the Draft is done and over?
I think it is more to do with personnel.
We need to upgrade our WR's to start. If Jimmy is the only one open then I'd throw to him to. If Ingram starts to earn his 1st round ranking and becomes what he should become then teams would have to respect our run game. Its not the play book so much as it is execution. |

I see it differently. Our Playbook is changed everytime there is a major weapon change. The playbook was overhauled from 2009 (Which won a SB) to work in favor of Jimmy Graham (Shockey never received that many targets), it is written with Drew in mind, it was changed to maximize Sproles's roll. Sproles is gone, new WR weapon added, Drews range, no longer an elite O-line... all need to be addressed in the play book. The way you manage talent is by making the puzzle play to their strengths, not trying to force a piece into a different shaped hole. (see 2012 defense) |
