And it doesn't automatically mean that the unknown player is better than the named guy, which is what you are arguing. No one has seen how Lelito/Armstrong will fare at center and no one knows if Goodwin can beat them out.

Everyone should quit their *****ing and know that whoever is the best will be starting...

It's a nice problem to have ... start the young, untested stud who has the all the tools to get the job done, or the experienced vet who's been to a few NFC Championships/Superbowl ... it's a great signing and a win-win any way it shakes out, IMO ... and it's another 'Michigan' guy on the offensive line ... if this keeps up, you may want to consider getting some Vernor's ginger ale, Better Made potato chips, Koegel's cold cuts & Sander's ice cream in the clubhouse, :lol:.

In this case I am, because Goodwin doesn't appear to be very good anymore. I will refer you back to the opinions of 49ers fans, they would know better than us at this point. And they wanted him benched in the middle of last season.

I got no problem with him as the bench guy. I don't really even have a problem with him as starter if he wins the job....I just think if that's the case it means we are going to be weak at that position.

He's good enough to play between two all pro guards and in front of a HOF QB. All of a sudden I'm a lot more comfortable at center than I was last season.

San Fran has a completely different blocking scheme/system than we do. Goodwin was a top-flight free agent when San Fran signed him; ask 9'ers fans 3 years ago how happy they were to get him. He is familiar with what we do, and I like the fact that Lelito AND Armstrong have to beat Goodwin out to start and/or make the 53. Both those young'uns can learn from JG, too, during the preseason. Can't wait to see how this develops.

I dont see how anyone could be against this. at best the young guy outplays him and starts. at worst we have a guy with all pro nfl experience playing center for us.

I would perhaps take those negative comments by the 49ers fans with a grain of salt, since playing center for someone like Kaepernick is very different to what it is to be playing with someone like Brees.

To me, Kapernick is someone who'll frustrate the O-line players time and time again with his (seemingly) improv-style of playing the QB position, whereas Brees is more predictable in his movements after the snap and, therefore, easier to protect from taking hits.

IMO, the Saints need a big bodied center to alleviate the interior pressure, which we all know is a killer for Brees and in which DLP struggled mightily and that is probably the biggest reason why he is gone. Goodwin could end up being a great fit even with somewhat diminished physical attributes from the last time he wore the black & gold, while allowing Lelito and perhaps Armstrong to take some more time to prepare themselves for the starting role.

I think this is the key.

The best player should get the start so this is a no-lose situation for the team. I do hope Lelito beats him out but if he is unable to I wouldn't want the guy starting. Worst case is Goodwin gets beat out but provides depth for the interior line.

He was good enough to start/play all games during his tenure there, just sayin' ... IDK how much stock I'm gonna' put into any Whiner's fan comments ... he'll be alright, ;). Worse case scenario, he & Champ Bailey smell up the locker room with Icy Hot, give interviews from the hot tub/ice baths and help coach up the youngsters on the roster ... you got big, bad N-drama-kong & Nick Fairley on the road Wk #7 (1pm EDT, Fox), you're gonna' be glad Goodwin's on your team, bet. :).

Exactly, with the way Kaepernick scrambles around, he wreaks havoc on blocking schemes. Sure, he makes plays with his feet but at the end of the day, your O/L needs a group counseling session to get their heads back on straight, :neutral:.


I like the old vets who still got something left in the tank & it's indicative of the Saints' knack for filling the holes/needs in their roster not always in the most conventional manner ... but filling them nonetheless ... for as much as the Lions try to copy the Saints, this is the one extremely important aspect they have yet to master, <sigh>.

Goodwin is a short term fix but his experience and coaching up of Lelito could prove to be the difference in a closely contested playoff game against 49ers or Seahawks. If he gives Drew a extra 0.5 to one second and a additional yard or two in the pocket it could be all the difference.

Love the thought of competition, and even the security of having a vet like Goodwin available. Lelito will need to work that much harder.

I want the best center playing for all 16 games plus the 3 playoff wins. The Whiners fan comments were about a guy that didn't fit their system...oddly, he STARTED 3 years for a team that went to a Super Bowl & 3 NFC Championship games in 3 years. They're just whining to be whining.

The best case scenario is that Goodwin is the same or better than he was 3 years ago in our offense, but Lelito and Armstrong both beat him out in preseason and we can trade Goodwin for a 4th/5th rounder...means we'd be set a center for a good long while with either young'un and an additional 2015 mid round pick.

In the real world, I can honestly see Goodwin going all the way to the final cut only to not make the 53 and Lelito starting with Armstrong on the PS. Unless Armstrong gets hurt...from what I've seen and read on him, he has the Chronic Injury Fairy following him around like rancid stank. It would not shock me if he hit the IR before final cuts. Would love to see him healthy throughout, obviously...lot of untapped potential there.
