Saints expected to sign Jonathan Goodwin, sources say(DONE DEAL)

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints are on the verge of bringing back a veteran from their Super Bowl XLIV championship team.

The Saints are expected to sign free agent center Jonathan Goodwin as the two sides are working on a deal Monday, according to a source. Nothing is set in stone, but chances are that Goodwin will be back with the Saints this week, the source added. NFL Network first reported the story.

Goodwin, who played for the Saints from 2006-10, has been linked to New Orleans since the San Francisco 49ers chose not to re-up his contract after he became an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Those whispers only became more incessant when the Saints brought in Goodwin for a visit April 16.

Goodwin, 35, will bring a veteran presence to a position thin on depth with Brian de la Puente signing with the Bears this offseason. The Saints chose not to take a center in the 2014 draft, leaving them with only Tim Lelito, a second-year swing lineman who filled in Jahri Evans for two games at guard last season.

Good
The depth on the line was a massive worry. One injury at guard and we were in bad shape

Good. O-line depth. He may not start but he is much needed vet presence.

Yep, he's simply insurance against injuries and setbacks in Lelito's development.

My guess is he's here to learn the new system and get acquainted with the new players.

He'll be a final cut and possibly resigned after week one to avoid guaranteeing his entire salary for the season.

Lets just hope he doesn't go all Olin Kreutz on us.

#Saints and Jonathan Goodwin have agreed to deal, per league source. Terms not disclosed. He should officially sign on Tuesday.

Wonder if he can beat out either Lelito or Armstrong to start?

Welcome back big guy. My money is on him being our starting C. Drew spoke highly of him a fees weeks ago.

IMO, he is washed up. I think he stays on the roster as a depth guy who knows the offense, but if he starts we will have serious problems in the middle.

How is he washed up Vegas? He is only 35 and played great for the past 8 years. No major injuries that I remember. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm not as big a Lelito fan as some Saints fans.

A. "Only 35"...35 is ancient for a football player, even an o-linemen.

B. Ask 49ers fans what they think of Goodwin's performance the last 2 seasons.

Jonathan Goodwin is washed up - SportsHoopla.com Sports Forums

"This guy needs to go. He used to at least run-block relatively well, but he doesn't even do that any more. His play has been lacking ever since he came to SF, and now it's just downright bad. He's drafting behind Iupati & Boone. The guy has one foot in retirement IMO. He needs to go. Now. Not next week. He's washed up."

"He's washed up like Randy Moss was last year."

"Kilgore will be the starter next season and Goodwin will be gone, no worries."

"I agree its time to let kilgore take the job"

"Agreed Goodwin should have been cut and the cap savings gone towards signing a FA WR to fill in for Crabtree and if Kilgore or Looney can't take over at center by now and get the job done they can both go as well."

"Good I hope so, because if I have to see Goodwin poor snapping for another year I will scream"

"The OL would be an unstoppable force with a good C."

"Remember how he killed the first drive in the Cardinals game? 3rd down, two rushers over top of him and he passed both of them to Gore and went ahead and tried to help Boone with a double team but pretty much just ended up standing by himself while Kap got sacked."

"How do you have two rushers right in front of you and then decide to block neither of them because you think it is a better idea to go after the guy Boone is engaged with?"

Drew is 35. And many O-Lineman play into their late 30's. And 9er fans suck.

A. Yes, Drew is 35, he's also the most protected player on the field. He doesn't have the wear and tear on his body that everyone else is going to have.

B. Yes, many o-linemen play into their late 30s, and most of them are shadows of their former selves. Remember Olin Kreutz? Wayne Gandy? Jamar Nesbit? Jerry Fontenot? Hell, Will Shields is a shoo-in Hall of Famer and he was terrible for about 3 years before he retired.

C. Yes they do suck, but that doesn't mean they're not right.

Re: Saints expected to sign Jonathan Goodwin, sources say(DONE DEAL)

It is what it is. He's probably not good enough anymore to play 16 games, but if he had to step in for 3 or 4 it would be fine.

Insurance.

I think he'll be the starter too. He would be an upgrade over DLP IMO. Not sure about Lelito. Haven't seen him play the position.

The coaches know what they are doing! They wouldn't have him back in the Saints team if they didn't think he was up to the job anymore!

Be assured, SP has some plans for him in some format or other!

GEAUX SAINTS!!!

Re: Saints expected to sign Jonathan Goodwin, sources say(DONE DEAL)

lets see an untested second (?) year player
an UDFA?

it makes sense to me. 35 is not young but a veteran that can play both center and guard seems to make sense. besides i never really thought he fit the niners power running game when he signed with them.

it may not be the answer but at least the saints are doing something after not doing anything in the past few drafts.

While I share your faith in the front office, nobody's perfect. We have draft busts and bad signings just like every other team. It wasn't all that long ago we all thought Olin Kreutz was the answer to replace our departed free agent at center.

The one thing I can take away from this signing is that Lelito and Goodwin are very similar players. We are clearly trying to get some beef in the middle after 3 years of going with a smallish guy in DLP. Whoever our starting center is, he's going to go about 320 pounds or so.

And the battle now takes "center" stage.

"The battle for the New Orleans Saints' starting center job officially begins Tuesday. Veteran Jonathan Goodwin will participate in Tuesday's organized team activities session after agreeing to terms Monday, according to a league source.

Goodwin, 35, will immediately compete with second-year offensive lineman Tim Lelito for the starting job. The 13-year veteran held this job for three seasons (2008-2010) in New Orleans after serving as Jeff Faine's backup from 2006-2007."

He's not just depth. He's the starter. Lelito is the depth.

Didn't think about it that way, but I suppose so. Still, there will be Many nuances, new system or not, that should help him along. Not to mention the familiarity he has w/ Brees & co.

Who's griping? Who's complaining? I don't see it.

But like Kreutz he is a guy on the tail end of his career whose name is much bigger than his performance. That's fine as an insurance/depth guy, but if he ends up starting that says to me we aren't very good at center.

I could be wrong, but I really don't think so. I fully expect Lelito to win the job hands-down. He has all the physical tools and from what I've read the smarts. Actually in terms of his size and athletic ability he is very reminiscent of a young Jonathan Goodwin....

And as I recall there were quite a few people on various message boards who thought Goodwin starting would be a total disaster after we let Jeff Faine leave. True story.

Just wondering; what does that have to do with the present situation?

I think Goodwin ranked in the top half of the league as far as starting centers were concerned the last two seasons in San Fran. Now with that said, I don't really care who starts. I'm confident both can get the job done. May the best man win.

It has everything to do with the present situation. You don't see it? Faine was a "name" player where Goodwin was not. Now Goodwin is a "name" player and Lelito is not.

Hell Kreutz was a name player and De la Puente was a total nobody. The point is, just because more people know who a player is, that doesn't mean he's automatically better than the anonymous second or third year guy.
