And the battle now takes "center" stage.
"The battle for the New Orleans Saints' starting center job officially begins Tuesday. Veteran Jonathan Goodwin will participate in Tuesday's organized team activities session after agreeing to terms Monday, according to a league source. Goodwin, 35, will immediately compete with second-year offensive lineman Tim Lelito for the starting job. The 13-year veteran held this job for three seasons (2008-2010) in New Orleans after serving as Jeff Faine's backup from 2006-2007." But like Kreutz he is a guy on the tail end of his career whose name is much bigger than his performance. That's fine as an insurance/depth guy, but if he ends up starting that says to me we aren't very good at center. I could be wrong, but I really don't think so. I fully expect Lelito to win the job hands-down. He has all the physical tools and from what I've read the smarts. Actually in terms of his size and athletic ability he is very reminiscent of a young Jonathan Goodwin.... And as I recall there were quite a few people on various message boards who thought Goodwin starting would be a total disaster after we let Jeff Faine leave. True story. |
