PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Preseason Power Rankings No. 6: New Orleans Saints | ProFootballTalk
:stupid: The only problem is, the Saints still might not have sufficient personnel on that side of the ball, so regression is a real possibility. But other than bringing in last-legs cornerback Champ Bailey, there wasn’t the kind of influx of talent they might have needed. They improved last year based largely on energy and emotion, and we’ll see how long that lasts in the face of a talent discrepancy. It's laughable really. Gantt spouted this same thing all last year, it's like these people are completely unwilling to see the obvious. Flood this fool with comments. |

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
First of all, the writer is Darin Gantt a former beat hack for the Carolina Panthers - so he basically eats out of Cam Newton's @$$...
Secondly, prefer all the ammunition and chips on the shoulder we can get, especially going into training camp... Third, he argues the Saints struggle on the road - he fails to mention that the Saints and Pats own the best road record since 2009... Finally, read his @$$hat criticism of the defense that the big acquisition was Byrd, had offseason surgery, and leaves adding only Champ Bailey... How is it a step back in personnel when you rid yourself of the worst (2012) safety tandem in NFL history in Harper and Jenkins and now have potentially the best three safety rotation in the league in Vacarro, Byrd and Bush?!? LOOK AT THE SOURCE... |

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
So is he saying that if Byrd is 100% we will be much improved??
It merits asking...especially since Byrd's surgery was precautionary and he is 100%. |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Well, the man 's entitled to his opinion, no matter how stupid it is.

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
The Saints are one season off the "worst defense in history". They were embarrassed on Monday Night Football last season against the Seahawks.
In a former Panther beat writers opinion, the Saints still have to prove themselves. That's fair enough. The Saints have the opportunity to show Gantt doesn't really know what he was talking about. I honestly believe most sports writers don't know any more about football than we do. In my opinion, I think he under rated quite a few things and it would be easy to make a counter argument to his "weaknesses", but really, what would it matter. The proof is in what happens on the field. Only time will tell. Someone should bookmark this thread and next offseason we can compare it to what actually happened. Might be more interesting than discussing pictures of Rob Ryan and number of pizzas he's got. |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
That's asinine. 4 potential all pro plus a future hall of fame CB. Yea no talent there. I would say we almost have less talent on offense than defense.
|
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
No "almost" about it. We definitely have more talent on defense than we do on offense.
Laughingly, they rank the Packers at #5, despite admitting the Packers defense is terrible and admitting that their overall roster is "JV" caliber (their words, not mine). http://purplejesus.files.wordpress.c...rs-fan-gif.gif |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Well then let's shut them up!
Bring on the season. :bng: |

I think 6 is fair. Maybe a little low. But we have a chance to be really really good
|
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
biggest concern is not the outside of the defense it is the middle. the saints did little to nothing at all to improve the depth on the dL or at MLB.
lets hope the question marks get answered during camp and some gems step up |

Statistically, yes... In 2012 they led the worse defense ever... Jenkins/Harper were better than you or I but even that bell curve doesn't make them good... We got better when Vaccaro took PT away from an "injured" Harper and when Bush replaced Jenkins; add Byrd, your comparing apples to turds... |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Don't we also get a pretty good linebacker back named Butler and a rookie corner to add depth. Dude is a straight hater. Barring injury we will win the superbowl and I cant wait to see the look on Rogers fake ass face.

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Upgrade, Downgrade or wash?
Byrd replaces Jenkins - Upgrade Vaccaro replaces Harper (full time) - Upgrade Champ replaces Greer - wash (at this point in Champ's career) Butler over Haralson - Upgrade Haralson as the backup - Upgrade Corey White 3rd season - Upgrade Patrick Robinson 4th season - Upgrade Rod Sweeting 2nd season - Upgrade Hicks 3rd season - Upgrade Foster 2nd season - Upgrade JJenkins 2nd season - Upgrade Then factor in all the draftees competing for spots at LB, CB, Safety and special teams and only the most uninformed fan, (otherwise known as a Falcon, Panther or Buc fan) could see anything but a major improvement over the 2013 unit. Can anyone point to one single position where we downgraded? Can anyone point to one single defensive coach where we downgraded? I didn't think so, now STFU! |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
I think we have all been awaiting Patrick Robinson's development. He is a bit of a tease.

What do they know.
|
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
He's entitled to his opinion. Personally I think he's picking one of the top 5 most talented rosters in the NFL to hate on. If not the most talented. If Josh Morgan can stay healthy the Saints will have the best WR core in history. They may have it without him.

I assume you meant "Joe" Morgan. And yes, that is a big IF as it relates to Morgan staying healthy. |
Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Yea Joe Morgan and I need to regress a bit from best WR core in history. Sometimes my Black and Gold goggles are a little too thick. But I do believe the Saints 2014 offense has a very good chance of being one of the best statistical offenses in history. "Joe" Morgan or not. I am anticipating Cooks catapulting the Saints offense in a similar way that Moss did to the Pats O when he got there.

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Yes we have been good historically. But we need to win at home AND on the road for the media to get off that sour note.

Re: PFT still thinks we have a lack of talent on defense
Speaking of Victor Butler....we haven't heard much out of training camp about him
No features or stories, no news that he's been put in on passing downs to rush the QB or anything |
