Training camp battles
As I see them:
Backup QB - Ryan Griffin vs. Luke McCown. I am a big fan of Griffin based on last preseason, and I think he could even be the guy who takes over when Brees retires. But we are in win-now mode and if we did lose Brees for a few games, McCown and his experience have a better chance of keeping the team afloat. 4th string RB - Travaris Cadet vs. Tim Flanders. Really looking forward to seeing these two players get after it. Cadet is a pretty good special teamer which may give him an edge in the competition, but there is something about Flanders' college footage that really excites me. Fullback - Erik Lorig vs. Austin Johnson - Lorig is the established player and I think most people assume the job is his. We shouldn't estimate Austin Johnson's chances here, though. I think he is the more pure fullback of the two, while Lorig gives you chances to be a little more versatile. It kind of just depends on what direction the coaches decide to go. 4/5/6 WR's - Robert Meachem vs. Joseph Morgan vs. Nick Toon vs. Andy Tanner. Safe to assume Colston, Stills, Cooks take up the first 3 spots. After that, I think it's a free-for-all. IMO the above 4 are the most realistically likely to make the roster with the front-runners Toon and Meachem Center - Tim Lelito vs. Jonathan Goodwin. This might be the most important camp battle going on. The coaching staff speaks highly of Lelito and did not draft a center when they had a chance, so I believe it is his job to lose. If he doesn't pan out, at least we know Goodwin is familiar with Brees and the offense. So at least we'll be able to avoid the Olin Kreutz-type disaster. Strongside linebacker - Parys Haralson vs. Victor Butler. Honestly we don't know how much 3-4 we'll be playing, so this may not even be a big part of the defense. Haralson is the stout run defender, Butler more of a pass rush guy. My guess is this is a platoon situation, where Haralson plays the true linebacker position and Butler coming down to the line on 3rd downs as an edge rusher. #2 corner - Corey White vs. Patrick Robinson vs. Champ Bailey. I am probably unlike a lot of people here in that I do no expect Bailey to win the #2 job. I think he is locked in at nickel. White vs. Robinson is a very intriguing battle to me as they have different strengths as players, White being the big physical bump-and-run guy and Robinson the pure man cover corner. I don't think Stanley Jean-Baptiste factors into this battle yet, but that could change if Robinson shows he is not quite over his injury. Kicker - Shayne Graham vs. Derek Dimke - Graham is a proven vet, Dimke the unknown with a bigger leg. In many ways this reminds me of past situations when we had the dependable John Carney and kept a bigger leg (Billy Cundiff, Garrett Hartley) for the long range stuff. I think there is a good chance we keep both kickers. |

Nailed it Jackster!
In the depth category I'm fired up at seeing Fortt vs Humber vs Reddick vs Powell. At safety I'm loving Sunseri versus Ball At CB I'm loving Sweeting vs Brooks vs Davis TE - Hill vs Jacobs |

Re: Training camp battles
It's exciting that we will have a bunch of good players battling for back up positions. Special teams should get a big boost. Never underestimate the value of the third phase of the game. Lots of wins and losses predicated on SPECIAL team plays.
