WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Va. -- Saints rookies Vinnie Sunseri and Ronald Powell have a lot in common.

Too much, actually.

Sunseri is a former safety at the University of Alabama, while Powell, an outside linebacker, also played in the Southeastern Conference at the University of Florida.

Both played well in college when healthy, but ended their amateur careers with forgettable knee injuries. Sunseri suffered a ACL knee tear in October, forcing him to miss the rest of the 2013 season. Powell missed the entire 2012 season with two ACL knee tears and was not fully healthy during his final season.

They're both here at Saints training camp in The Greenbrier, hoping to make the regular-season roster on special teams.

Such a feat would allow them to fully recover from their past problems -- more mental than physical -- and could lead to bigger roles in the near future.

"I think it's really important to go out there and show the coaches you can do everything," Sunseri said. "You can play special teams, you can play defense. But for me, to show everybody that that I'm healthy."

They can recover from those injuries being young. Older, say late 20's, very small margin players ever recover. If they do they are never the same player.

I've read the opposite. Both have flashed some great play recently after a slow start.

Per Payton (yeah, it could just be coach speak)
How does Ronald Powell look so far?
“He’s doing a good job. Joe Vitt and Brian Young are doing a nice job with him. He’s a young guy who’s got a lot of talent, and we’re excited about him. He hustles, (and) he’s doing great on (special) teams as well. We’re really excited about his upside.”

What have you seen from Vinnie Sunseri?
“I think he’s doing an excellent job. He’s really had a good camp. The OTAs, he struggled a little bit just getting the information and playing the way we want to play. He’s doing a much better job. He’s taking coaching from Andre Curtis, who does a great job with the safeties, and he’s getting better every day.

”Corey White has had one interception in each of the last two practices. What do you think of him so far?
“We really like him. We love him as an inside corner, but he has done some good things outside as well. We’re excited about him. He started for us down the stretch and did a really good job in those games. We know he’s an ascending player and he’s going to be really good.”

We should see them all in preseason. No more just imagining how this will work out......we'll actually get some real information.

I keep hearing that Sunseri is doing well and we may end up needing Corey White to start again at corner. Last year he scared me to death when he was starting but apparently he's having a great camp.
