Jean Baptiste

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I think SJB is right where a physically-gifted 2nd round pick who made only 17 CB starts in college would be. Dude has been playing CB for, what, 24 months or thereabouts? Actually, he's ahead of where I thought he'd ...

Actually, he's ahead of where I thought he'd be considering the ultra sharp learning curve for him. He already tackles better than a few starting CB's in this league, though he is still nowhere close to where he needs to be in field/ball awareness and technique. The tackling did surprise me, though.

Thinking way down the line here, but since SJB is a bit old for a rookie at 24, do y'all think he starts in the next year or 2, signs an extension, and eventually ends up as our free safety next to KVac in 5-7 years? SJB is a year older than KVac, BTW. Just my random "SQUIRREL!" moment.

Re: Jean Baptiste

Scouting projected Sunseri move to FS in his transition to the NFL; and then you have Raphael Bush who keeps getting better with playing time; but you've got beaucoup salary cap funds committed to Byrd, who comes with a "great when healthy" warning from frustrated Bills fans; not to mention we added two (2) great free agents in Pierre Warren and Marcus Ball...

In the end, with the Saints Deep Three, not sure to have defined, traditional roles...

And we're banged up at CB as things stand now, so he needs to play and play well, now...

Oh, I understand the needs of the present. I jumped out half a decade where Byrd would be 33-35 years old and projecting a possibility for a move to FS for SJB at the end of his 2nd or beginning of his 3rd contract if he's still around with this team. It was my "look-a-SQUIRREL!" moment and nothing more. I am NOT insisting he move to FS now by any means.

He certainly and undoubtedly needs to develop as a corner now and ASAP for this Super Bowl-caliber 2014 team. I was (feebly) trying to project out 5-7 years based on SJB's age as a 24 year old rookie and the very real fact that there's a possibility of SJB not developing into a well-functioning starting CB.

I absolutely LOVE our safety situation now and 2-5 years from now, and I also love the fact that SJB does not need to start right away for this 2014 defense. It will only help him develop as a CB and learn this defensive scheme by marinating on the bench for a year. SJB is NOT a Practice Squad candidate as 31 other teams will pick him up with a quickness and he will have to eat one of the 53 spots.

This kid needs to become a Special Teams monster to overcome the ineptitude of McMahon's schematic idiocy. Kind of like how Malcolm Jenkins was on Special Teams as a rookie for our 2009 Super Bowl-winning awesome sauce bad@$$ team.

Great retort, by the way...

You know, that's one thing you don't see much anymore is young cornerbacks with size that start to "slow down just a little" transition to Safety...

Best reference I have is Ronnie Lott...

Bingo...you nailed it.

SJB needs to get much, much meaner to be in Lott's neighborhood...that man played possessed.

I wanted OC Marcus Martin, but I'm not an NFL GM either, not yet at least.

Re: Jean Baptiste

Jarvis Landry was available. Would've given us a returner. Is a special teams monster, great blocker and perfect companion for Cooks to set up Saints WR core for years. Biggest, best hands in the draft paired with best playmaker and deep threat in the draft. So yea, Baptiste better be good-this year. Brees window is getting smaller. We want to win now.

Re: Jean Baptiste

Don't think you can ever have too many cornerbacks; at the least, there's a premium on them and you can trade to upgrade another position or have great value to trade for a mid-round selection...
