K Graham resigned, QB Ryan Released

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints have signed kicker Shayne Graham and waived quarterback Ryan Griffin, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Graham, a vested veteran, was cut on Saturday during the final move to get to 53 players after battling with rookie Derek Dimke all summer. He was re-signed Tuesday afternoon.

Saints coach Sean Payton said last week the team liked both of their kickers and weren't looking elsewhere after a close battle all through training camp. And despite the availability of veteran kickers such as Connor Barth, Jay Feely and Ryan Succop, he stuck to that plan.

Strange move
Must be other irons in the fire here.
Lorig looks a IR case as does Fortt. Champ coming back on a non guaranteed money?, a move for OL depth?

Still surprised is Graham resigned

Griffin is too good to just let him go for nothing. I'm sure they want to get him through waivers and put him on the practice squad but they're taking a big risk that nobody will claim him.

But he's not a win now player. When Drew retires we can worry about the backup, in 5 years

I think Loomis allowed every other team to fill their PS spots, and their QB quotas, then chose to release Griffin and resign Graham. Now, Griffin should slide through waivers and can be resigned to our PS. At least that's how I like to analyze it

He might not be a win-now player, but you could probably flip him for a draft pick.

Looking at it close up it makes sense. Veteran kicker retained, QB with more experience retained. Still not sure why they even gambled with Champ, he was a longshot even if healthy.

Graham? Graham??? Of all the kickers that are or were out there on the market?

Reckon we're going with the evil we know instead of going with the evil we don't know in this kicker situation...

Who's to say they didn't try?
Besides, he will likely clear waivers since it's it so late in the week, then we can always activate him from the practice squad to keep him.
Another brilliant move by the front office.

Exactly. But, make that 9 years from now with at least four Lombardi's under his belt.

Picked the wrong kicker :( even worst you waive the wrong player to get him; why not waive a injured player not going to play next week?

If Griffin goes I'll be pissed

Its nit like dropping both kickers didn't bring a little attention

With the extra cap money from Champ Bailey why couldn't we pay more and get a stellar kicker

Griffin wasn't all that... I was impressed one game from him and besides that nothing.

He isn't our future.

We would be lucky to get a 7th for Griffin
Mallet just went for a 6th rounder and he was more touted that Griffin.

Well... they reached out to me for the kicking job. Being French, I am a soccer style kicker, not quite as good as Kickalicious, but not far off. We were negotiating, but I abruptly turned them down. They had no choice but to resign Graham. :broccoli:

Yet another move reminding us that we don't know a whole lot. Griffin and Bailey out, Graham & Dixon in? No one had that. Edebali, Powell, Fortt AND Knox make it, but only 5 CB's?
Remember that SP makes the personnel decisions, and Mickey cuts the checks...seems like they might have a plan for the $3.2 mill in cap space we have left

Re: K Graham resigned, QB Ryan Released

Don't like either decision. Understand both. I would have signed Barth and placed Lorig on bring back IR. Barth is simply a better kicker with an upside and Johnson can hold down the limited role of FB down until Lorig is healthy. For the ones saying Griffin can't win now, you clearly didn't watch him with the 1's, and you're mainly just rationalizing the FO's decision. The guy can and will play in the NFL. Outside of one drive in preseason, McNown looked like the journeyman 11 year vet with 9 TD's and 14 ints to his credit. The Rams will claim him because they have absolutely nothing to lose by claiming him. That being said, Griffin could go unclaimed and the Saints may sign Barth next week. You never know. Hopefully, neither will play a factor in whipping the Falclowns.

Re: K Graham resigned, QB Ryan Released

By allowing all the other teams including the rams to fill out the qb position on each teams 53 roster an practice squad it lowers the odds some team claims griffin or offers him a practice squad spot.Still its a risk i would not have done. Also the IR can return from what i understand can only be used one time only each season. So if in the atlanta game say Drew hurt his knee bad an you know the rehab will take say 8 weeks then you sure would wish you had the option of IR can return.I think they will use itthe IR return an could be on the fullback they just wish to see how the injury list looks after two to four games.Question now is who gets cut on the practice squad to make a spot for Griffin,

Who's to say they even want Griffin on the practice squad? We are in win now mode with Drew's age and the backup QB needs the experience. By the time Drew retires, Griffin will be past his prime or close to it...

Why is everyone so caught up in who's the next franchise quarterback when it comes to making QB decisions? It doesn't matter if Griffin is our long term guy of the future or not. The whole point of having backup quarterbacks is to have someone in case your starter gets hurt. In my opinion, Griffin is a better QB than Mccown and therefore gives us the best chance to win should anything happen to Brees. It makes no sense to me how they could take Luke over Ryan.

How do we really know? How much have we seen Griffin against a "starting" defense?

He had one good preseason game against the #2s/3s/4s, at least McCown has seen action against real defenses in his career...

Re: K Graham resigned, QB Ryan Released

Griffin has obviously become a fav of many on the board, but it's clear from this move that SP & Mickey are either willing to risk losing him, or know that it would be a longshot for another team to make a roster move just to sign a third-stringer.
If they thought Griffin was better than McCown or the clear replacement for Drew, then no way do they cut him. Fact is, they did.
They played this game last year and won (Rams), so there is a good chance RG has a verbal from Mickey, and that is locker isn't even cleaned out yet.

Euphoria 09-03-2014 07:59 AM

Re: K Graham resigned, QB Ryan Released

I am not buying into all the love for Griffin.

He doesn't have it nor is he the long term answer for us either. He is expendable. Fact is he didn't show enough that he can contribute to us winning games this season and I seriously doubt next season as well.

If you aren't going to be able to help us win then you are taking up a valuable roster spot.

Be gone with him.
