Offense

Seems like we have all the pieces in place to take a whole new approach and philosophy to our offensive play. We have the backs and big receivers that can pound and grind out hard yards to wear defenses down. We can do it slowly and methodically with a heavy dose of running and short passes to Colston and Graham AND get the ball to speedy Cooks just to add more confusion and humiliation. The pieces are the coaches ready to accept that?
We have historically been a finesse team and many many times Brees has had to put a big load on his shoulders and carry the team with his arm. He doesn't need too anymore. First off he is getting older, throwing less and dinking and dunking will be easier on his arm and that oblique. Yea maybe we can win by throwing it but why when we don't have too. Use your weapons to your advantage. The point of the game is to win, not break records and pad stats.
He did do a decent job of balancing the run and pass today, so it seems like he's at least giving it a shot. Just don't abandon it if it starts to shudder.
Our run game is amazing this year and with all the negative so far that is one part of the game that is positive and it needs to be utilized.

Re: Offense

DUDE, I totally agree.
Weren't we all drooling to see what this offense would do coming into the regular season? With the offensive weapons we have we should be scoring 40 points on ANYBODY.
What happened to Sean's creativity? I remember back in 2006 a triple reverse flea-flicker half-back pass was expected on each drive. Now the Saints' offense is so .. so vanilla. Did you see that end around hand-off to Cooks that went for 20+ yds? That's the kinda stuff we were expecting. But no, we're destroying defenses with our ground attack and then Sean goes right back to trying to force a pass to Graham with 2 defenders hanging on his back. I mean, Graham is a BEAST but damn, we've got more weapons, use 'em, get creative.

Re: Offense

It seems the teams that beat us only play us for passing and play the running game second. Payton really has trouble seeing this.

There is no doubt that we could had created 1 more running play that would have gained yardage at some time in the 4th quarter that would have burned off 15 seconds. :brood:

Oh absolutely! I think every Saints fan saw this playing out "just like last week" when we had to punt to Cleveland with 2:46 to go with all their timeouts left.
It's beginning to look obvious that our defense struggles the most when trying to stop an ad-lib hurry-up offensive attack. At least that's the trend.

I've always been one these fans that says "leave Sean alone, he's knows what he's doing".... but his play selection and clock management is making second guess his awareness... maybe it's the "glasses".

Re: Offense

Our pass protection stunk up this game today. If Brees is going to throw we need to give him time to do it. If the O-line had protected Brees today we would have been fine.

Our O-line learned how to run block this year -- but forgot how to pass protect. It's like they can't do both things at once. :-(

Re: Offense

How many slightly off target passes has Jimmy Graham ignored? Against Atlanta a pass bounced off his leg and he made no effort to catch it. Against Cleveland a ball went right between his arms and was intercepted. I suspect he is letting his personal feelings toward Brees affect his effort. I believe Jimmy is the best pass catcher in the NFL and quite possibly a league MVP, but his effort is often piss poor. He still can't block and he avoids contact like he's Lance Moore. Everyone else on the team fights for every possible yard. Jimmy will be one on one with a corner and step out of bounds. I think this teams problems are in the locker room. If they don't come together as a team, they'll continue to get out hustled and outplayed.

Just looked at the stats.

Graham is 5th in total yards (among all receivers)
Tied for first in 1st downs (among all receivers)
Is averaging a touchdown per game
He has a 78% catch percentage
And is tied with Gronk for 10th out of 56 tight ends in run blocking.

That'll show Brees.

Anyone else getting sick of an offense that subs players in and out every play for the sake of matchups, I personally am now its resulting in this kind of play

Euphoria 09-15-2014 02:34 PM

Re: Offense

you act like we are the only ones that sub players in???

We aren't the only team. It is called depending on the yardage and play you want to utilize and looking for a miss match.

Besides it isn't our O who is losing these games for us...

It's resulting in the second most points scored and second most yards earned.

Very true, but we punted on our first 4 drives because Sean got so pass happy

I guess the problem I'm referring to isnt really the offense, its the play calling in general especially when the game is on the line

Defense is pathetic though, don't understand how we got so bad in one season

Euphoria 09-15-2014 02:36 PM

Re: Offense

People some times this its:
"ALL OFFENSE ALL THE TIME"

But there is a unit on the team they call Defense.

Yeah, that's what I keep wondering. Terrible secondary play and no rush up the middle. Looks a lot like the 2012 defense.

73Saint 09-15-2014 03:24 PM

Re: Offense

Defense isn't playing situational football. Either Ryan's scheme is too complex for them and they are out-thinking themselves, or we just aren't very smart as a defense. It's hard to watch, so much like the year w/o SP, and Spags was our DC...

dizzle88 09-15-2014 03:29 PM

Re: Offense

Did anybody rewatch the play where the browns got wide open for the deep catch before the FG......pathetic

Corey white and Keenan Lewis cover the same man
Patrick Robinson sprints the whole length of the formation, then pretty much tackles the guy that Byrd and Lofton have double covered
Slot receiver left wide open and The bad pass by hoyer was the only thing that made it not go in for a TD, Still did enough though

Does anyone remember that Sean was stripped of the play calling in Dallas? Just sayin'

Re: Offense

They let us down in a couple of games last year but injuries had a huge role in that one along with a LT and a OC not to be named that is no longer with the saints. those issues were solved.

so if it is not the offense :deadhorse2:.

Take them by the hand and help them understand your side.

We can't go all Peterson on people that refuse to listen.

Re: Offense

For years this offense feels out the defense for the first 2 possessions then exploits mismatches. If those mismatches are found in the 1st possession, we march down the field fairly easily those first couple of possessions. But if we can't cop a good feel in those first 2 (i.e. @ CLE), the 1st quarter offense looks rancid. I've noticed this over the years in the Payton/Brees era. However, they make the necessary adjustments in-game most of the time if the initial offensive game plan flops due to penalties, turnovers, O-line blocking (or lack thereof), being behind on the scoreboard, etc...

Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I taking Crazy Pills?

Our offense has always been good at making adjustments, that's why you see Brees and Carmichael studying the photos after a drive is done
Our offense normally gets on track even if they do begin the game struggling, example vs Miami in 2009 - brees threw 3 picks in the first half, second half we outscored the dolphins 43-8

The D look like no adjustments are being made, infuriating to watch

Jimmy was reportedly furious that after Brees signed his big contract he went on TV and claimed that Jimmy is a TE, so the Saints could pay him less money. He then went on to comment that if Jimmy left, the Saints would be OK. I know this should be just business in the NFL but some of the passes that Jimmy has ignored because they were slightly poor passes made me wonder.

i do not know about all of that but next year when Drew can redo his contract Jimmy should feel better. if he does not then Jimmy will have plenty of company.

Jimmy's playing some of the best ball of his career. 78% completions would indicate that not only his he not ignoring any passes but he's catching more than he ever has.
