Saints try out cornerbacks Derek Cox and Brandon Ghee, o-lineman Eric Olsen, offensive guard Lemuel Jeanpierre and center Alex Parsons

Offensive Lineman Eric Olsen was with the Saints from 2012-2013. He played in every game in 2012, but was placed on injured reserve in 2013 and waived with an injury settlement.

The Saints had a visit set up with cornerback Derek Cox prior to last year but he ultimately signed a 4-year, $20 million contract with the San Diego Chargers. The Saints ultimately signed Keenan Lewis, while Cox was cut after only one season.

Cox began last season as a starter for the Chargers but was benched after seven games.

Cox, 28, spent training camp with the Minnesota Vikings, but was cut after the third preseason game. He also had a brief offseason stint with the Baltimore Ravens, but didn't make the 53-man roster.

I like Olsen, he looked good when he was here. Solid back-up.

methinks Goodwin injury might be serious
Lelito for Goodwin isn't bad...next guy up for Lelito might be an issue

Maybe, but I think Olsen has taken snaps at Center too.

IIRC we cut Olsen because he was injured, now maybe if he's healthy???

Our front office may suck at acquiring LB's, but OL has never been a problem. They seem to be able to find adequate OL just throwing darts, drunk, in the dark, left handed, wearing a cast...

Also, it appears Cox's strength was playing press man coverage.

I think San Diego used him as a zoner.

Sound familiar?

Dumb question I guess but Olsen kid, related to HOF Merlin Olsen?

Olsen was with the Steelers last year, IIRC. He was a pretty decent backup with us for a stretch. Still I'm surprised they want to bring somebody in, I thought Kelemete played pretty well preseason.

Cox must have really gone downhill fast to get cut from so many teams in just a year. He was pretty decent at one point I thought.

Nothing wrong with OL depth...Olsen is a solid backup but wouldn't think we'd want him starting for extended period of time.

Cox was just in the wrong system, I'm thinking.

Olsen is good, not sure about Cox though. Champ Bailey? Anyone? Bueller?

Champ Bailey has obviously lost a step or two. After the Saints cut him he tried out at the Lions and he wasn't even taken seriously. He may be at retirement threshold.

If Ghee can stay healthy he's not a bad CB.

Olsen should know most stuff we do allready so that should be a solid pickup.

These corner tryouts; could it be a sign the end is near for Robinson?

You're probably right. That's kind of sad, but he'll be a first-ballot hall of famer. I just wanted to see him get a ring.

could be interesting to watch over the next few weeks. White did kinda take over PRob's position by the end of the game and PRob was seeing the field on more special teams play.

Olsen has one brother, Drew, a safety at Gettysburg College. His father, Andy Olsen, was a New York City firefighter. Just three days before the 9/11 attacks, his father was promoted to Lieutenant. Therefore he was in officer training on September 11, and not with Ladder 80, his firehouse at the time. When his father finally arrived at the World Trade Center site, both towers had already collapsed. A few days later, when he was digging through the rubble, his father found a truck from his firehouse buried and destroyed. None of the firefighters in that particular unit survived .

We need depth on the o line. High ankle sprains seem to linger for the season.

One more injury to an O line starter and where are we?

On the CB - I think Sean is attempting to motive Prob in another, more immediate way.

FinSaint 09-24-2014 07:46 AM

Cox looked pretty good in the preseason and I was surprised that he was cut by the Vikes. I think it had more to do with the roster make-up than him performing badly. I definitely don't see it as a bad thing if he's been given a look by the Saints.

Good breakdown of Derek Cox by the Chargers last year:

We have done really well picking up chargers discards. Brees, Sproles, Mech. Why not take a shot on Cox he cant be worse than Prob-lem

I really liked PRob on special teams...with his physical gifts, he could be a beast of punt coverage gunner and kickoff coverage. We saw a glimpse of that vs MIN.

Yeah, but they actually thought he was going to be their #1 receiver. The Chargers are dumb.

How come we don't trade for a corner that fits our system? Or better yet an inside linebacker. I'm all about giving up picks for proven commodities.

Cornerbacks are a premium that no team wants to part and we've certainly never been able to draft a shut-down cornerback...

Too much dead money at inside linebacker which is on Loomis and begs the question, why would they be motivated (Lofton, Hawthorne) to play, practice hard if they no their position is salary cap guaranteed...

That's why I don't drink the coolaid and pat Loomis on the back for putting on a quick fix for bad signings, moves (i.e. Lofton, Hawthorne, Grubbs et al)...

CB is the first place coach Payton started with when he came to New Orleans.

I still say the Carolina pantsees stole our pick kluchlee when they picked ahead of us after they beat us twice the prior year. we had the same record but they picked ahead of us. I believe he was the backer we 've been missing since ricky Jackson.

The Colts made a nice move for Vontae Davis. And if we really want to be a 3-4 team we've got to get better, faster, and deeper at linebacker. Our d line is deeper then our lb core.

As far as CB, I'd try and make a trade for Cary Williams of the Eagles, or even Boykins who is sitting behind them. We could probably get one of them for no more then a 4th. Hell, Sproles went for a 4th.

From what I have been reading lately, Cary is a locker room cancer and a "me" guy. I love the dog in him but pass.

I'm a me guy. I like me guys. But nah, I heard his teammates love him and he's a leader. The coaching staff is a different story.

I know he complained about being over worked at practice, but I haven't heard much else.

Apparently some of his teammates agreed with him too.
