The 2014 Saints are Pretty Balanced. Does that Even Matter?
If there’s anything Saints fans don’t like about Sean Payton, it’s that he calls too many passing plays. Right? Isn’t that as close to consensus criticism as we tend to get? The by-product of balance is winning, goes the thought; Sean Payton’s Saints pass too much and, as proven by the correlation between wins and pass/run ratios closer to 50/50 than 70/30, if only he would be balanced more often the Saints would win more games.
The 2014 season, so far, doesn’t fit that storyline, because the Saints have been more balanced in 2014 than they have been in any season other than 2009 and 2006. Let’s establish a baseline. Between 2006 and 2013, the Saints called 8458 offensive plays. Of those, 5244 were passes and 3304 were runs. That’s a pass/run ratio of 61/39. The 2014 Saints are Pretty Balanced.
