2-3 going into the bye week; 1 game back of division lead

LOL

Come on you have to laugh. As crappy as this team has been we still have a great chance even to win the division, and the division is hot garbage.

Is this the Super Bowl contender most thought? No way. But there's still plenty reasons to keep watching. Even after all this. I find that amazing.

Man, at least they continued to fight. Drews gotta stop with those bone head interceptions though. Thats getting old real quickly. Well-timed bye if you ask me. Maybe they can turn the ship around and get rolling. Defense played relatively well, despite the 31 points, 14 were mainly from Drew.

Add that this was a hard win. They came back from behind. It was at SDome. You know the media and their opponents will go with that "Saints W at home only."
The S have something to build on right now before they were too far down at week 5.
They have a lot of work to do during these next two weeks.

Long schedule ahead with early Bye-week.

All tough teams coming up, for S this year anyway.

I've been wondering if Drew has had an eye exam lately.

Even though they fought their way back to a victory it was at home & it still seemed like a puny effort. If this game was played on the road I think they may have lost it. At least they are keeping us engaged by being 2-3.

Too bad Carolina won but they have yet been able to put back to back winning seasons together.

The boneheaded INT"s and Pick6s are killing this team. I heard Payton ripped him a new one today and he began to throw the ball away after that. True?

He did throw a couple of them away later. You may be correct.

Brees does need some coaching from Payton, but one thing Payton can't fix is that weak ass arm he is dealing with. Have we seen any long throws this year? I dont mean long as in YAC I mean bombs that actually work.

I didn't want to believe the people saying Brees has lost it. I even defended him before the season, but now it's hard to deny that Brees just can't throw the deep ball anymore.

Maybe that oblique is still bothering him or he jinxed himself by saying he could play till he's 45. I do believe in karma.

The zip on the ball hasn't been there at all, throwing behind recievers and floating the ball when throwing deep, has been a bad sign. Our 100 million dollar man is missing a lot of throws I hate to say.

Maybe the direct product of throwing nearly 600 times a season? That could wear anyone's arm.

People said PT will start to decline now he's over 30 years old, but because PT has never had to carry the load he's never looked better

No your looking at YAC...

A screen that goes for 45 yds has nothing to do with Brees being able to throw the deep ball. Hill had a ton of YAC and Jimmy got about 7 yds of YAC.....

This is hands down the best WR group Brees has had in his career...

He did hit Hill in stride on a nice deep pass and hit Colston in the hands in the end zone. Drew is clearly not accurate on the deep ball as he was in say 2009, but he's gone through stretches like this before where he couldn't hit it. Just some little thing is off.

Who'd of thought @ DET would be so huge for this team? A win on the road against an offensive who is also struggling to score. Detroit did get beat in their house against Buffalo, so they are obviously beatable at home.

Win on the road @ DET, get back to .500, and shut everyone up about only able to win at home. Sounds good.

I don't think it's a weak arm. Drew has been throwing behind the receivers for a year or two now. Even when we're on the 5-10 yard line and he's throwing into the end zone he routinely throws it well behind the receivers.

He has never been this inaccurate throwing the deep ball.

you can see from this that between 09-11 Brees was the best at the deep ball: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blo...-deep-passing/

But this year that Big PA and slugo seem route have not been there.

Re: 2-3 going into the bye week; 1 game back of division lead

He did throw a lot of passes and he also seldom throws deep anymore. His muscle memory of force is off and his arm was also tired is how I see it.

Granted, he doesn't have a cannon but he can still chuck it mighty far enough if needed. We've had gunslingers before. They sucked. Can't have it all folks.

Re: 2-3 going into the bye week; 1 game back of division lead

His arm looks exactly the same as it always has. He has always under thrown most of his deep throws

He's become Captain Checkdown. I think he's arm has become weaker the past few years but with his accuracy, he should be able to get away with it and he hasn't. Let's use Peyton for example. His arm strength is not there anymore either but he makes it up with outstanding ball placement and timing. Arm strength shouldn't be an excuse for guys like Peyton and Drew. Drew needs to get his mind in the right place and be smart with the football. Get back to what makes him an elite quarterback. Precision, timing, and making smart decisions.

I agree with this. He was never hitting receivers in stride on the deep balls. He just was extremely accurate, made tremendous decisions, had tons of time, and would throw the ball to anybody on the field. Now it's Graham or the other team.

Tampa shot themselves in the foot several times today and could have won. Our defense and overall lack of a pass rush concerns me.

I read in the recap on ESPN that Payton did in fact have some choice words for Drew - I believe at some point when we were down two scores. I'm sure we'll hear more about it. I know I'm interested.

Maybe in practice our receivers are a step slower -- so Drew under throws to compensate? I do not buy the arm strength BS. Anyway, message delivered from the haters. I hope he throws a 35+ yarder to Meach against DET and STHU.

The big problem with Brees deep ball is protection. He has never had an arm like Favre, Elway, Cutler or Stafford where he can just whip it 60 yards in the air from his back foot. Our most succesful deep plays since SP and Brees came to the Saints have been the play-action passes. For a PA to be successful you need two things.

1. A running game that the opposing defence actually respects.

2. An O-line that can execute the PA blocking.

When a defence really respects your running game you will se safties starting to creep closer to the LOS to be in better position against the run. You will see CBs glancing to the backfield. LBs will shoot downhill in an instance if they smell a run. None of this is happening against us. Our opponents are not scared of any of our RBs so they are sitting back pretty blanketing our recievers and creating pressure with 4 men.

The second part takes a lot of skill, first you need to get of the LOS in a real agressive manner to really make it look like a run, only to settle, get your feet underneath you and create a solid pocket for the QB to step up in. This can be especially tough against a good DT who can easily switch from runstuffing mode to a bullrush and thus collapsing said pocket. forcing the QB to roll out. Brees has not near the same armstrength when moving as he has when he can set up and use his whole body to throw.

There you have it. Not so much about Brees as about everything around him.

Re: 2-3 going into the bye week; 1 game back of division lead

Brees has not always under thrown the deep ball, watch and see

If he did this for meachem yesterday ( put it in stride) meachem has a walk in TD, however meachem had to slow down for it which let the DB make a play

I'm sorry but I think his arm strength isn't what it used to be, surely if the guy could put it in stride he would, why would he purposely under throw it and allow the DB to make a play like the 3 times yesterday.

Yes, if you look on coacheshotseat.com/NFL/ Mike Smith has the number 5 seat, Payton the number 6 seat, Jason Garrett number 7.

Thats just stupid for Payton to be in the "hotseat." What 4/4 seasons with 10+ wins he's coached in the last 5 years is bad enough to be put on the hot seat? I'll admit he's arrogant and is slowly changing his ways, but hot seat? Really...?

Devery Henderson TD - September 18 VS Chicago Bears - YouTube

The difference in that clip and the deep throws Brees has been attempting this year are, as I have previously pointed out, protection. in this clip you can see how he has time to set up and launch the ball.

How big of an influence do you guys think losing his QB coach (Lombardi) has had on Drew? When Detroit signed Lombardi as an OC at first & touted his resume for being Drew's QB coach, I thought, "Meh, Brees is self-coaching, who couldn't hold that job?" ... but in retrospect, I'm beginning to wonder if there wasn't some sort of bond there that may have had an impact on Drew ... you know, sorta' like losing your blankee when you were a kid, :)

That makes sense to me. There was an article on nola.com, Brees mentioned that the one thing that comes with age is the recovery process isn't what it once was. Sounds like to me he was saying, without saying it, that he isn't right from that injury...

Maybe .... I thought SP filled that role though for Brees.

Re: 2-3 going into the bye week; 1 game back of division lead

No doubt that Lombardi was a big part of the QB unit behind the scenes. I mean Brees was always good in NO, but just look at how the numbers skyrocketed when Carmichael (who Brees knew from San Diego) shifted into offensive coordinator and Lombardi was slotted into QB's coach, under Payton. The whole thing just went into the stratosphere.
