And then there’s the certain and inalienable fact that the Saints defense plays inordinately better at home, no matter the level of the opposing competition. In fact, the Saints are 20-0 in their last 20 games with Sean Payton manning the sideline of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Just using the past 19 wins since the start of the 2011 season (excludes all games in the 2012 season in which Payton was absent), the Saints have won by a combined 388-point differential, or 20.4 points per game.

In other words, in those games the Saints have won by almost three touchdowns. In those games they’ve given up 30-plus points just twice (against Houston in Week 3 of 2011 and Week 5 this year against Tampa). Only five separate times have the Saints given up 20 or more points.

In the other 12 victories, the Saints have given up no more than 17 points—in which three included games where the opposing team scored less than 10 points (they also shut out Tampa Bay in 2012, the same year in which the Saints defense set an NFL record for incompetence, further proving the point that the defense excels in the Dome).
