Cortana Picks the Steelers over the Saints
 

Microsoft's Cortana had a solid Week 12, correctly predicting 11 of 15 NFL games.

It's now 116-60 (65.9%) on the season.

Cortana is a Windows phone virtual assistant that is using a Bing Predicts algorithm to predict every NFL game this season. It started at the World Cup, where it correctly predicted 15 of 16 knockout stage games, including Germany's surprising win over Brazil in the semifinal.

Week 12 was a nice bounceback week for the algorithm after it went 8-6 in Week 11.

There were a ton of big favorites (only two point spreads were within a field goal), and most of them won. Las Vegas betting favorites also went 11-4, and Nate Silver's ELO model went 12-3 — correctly predicting the Bengals over the Texans when both Cortana and Vegas had Houston as the favorite.

ELO has correctly predicted 69.8% of all NFL games this year, while Vegas favorites are right around Cortana at 115-58-3. The Bing Predicts algorithm makes picks straight up, not against the point spread.

I had two games pegged as sure losses. Ravens and Steelers.
Even if we lose this game, and I'm thinking we do, we'll still win the division because the Falcons and Panthers suck worse than we do.

Now if we actually win this game? Watch out, it may catapult us into that "you don't wanna play the red-hot Saints in the playoffs" category.

Oh its gonna be so sweet to win it all with a 7-9 regular season record!!!

If we did get into the playoffs with a losing record, think how fast Ol' Roger would change the playoff format

Exactly. They were already talking about it the year Seattle beat us when they got in with a shifty record. If we do it they will change it for sure.
I think it would be dumb to exclude a division from the playoffs for any reason. Unless they structure the game a completely different direction and do away with divisions all together what would be the point? I like that every division gets represented.

Steeler's seem to take games off this season, for some reason i don't think they will take a "Busman's Holiday" against the Saints.

Yes, she has indeed proven to be a cruel mistress, :neutral: ... would be all her Saints predictions correct, New Orleans would be 9-2 and comfortably atop the Division ... as it is, she has only been able to pick the Saints correctly 55% of the time (approx.).

Here's an interesting stat though ... Pittsburgh would also be 9-2 if she were 100% correct on her Steeler picks. Again, as it is, she has been even less accurate picking the Steelers correctly at 45%. Furthermore, she has the most problems picking AFC North games (even more than NFC South) with a <50% accuracy rating.

... and looking at her picks, I got to respectfully disagree with (not counting the Thanksgiving Day picks, which I probably would have agreed with just to keep the peace for the holidays, ;)) her picks of Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Carolina and Green Bay ... oh well, it never would have worked between us anyway, :lol:.

I really haven't seen much variance between her picks and vegas lines- she picks favorites, mostly home favs.
Do we need an app with an algorithm for that? I've got a drunk uncle that can point to the team in all caps and with the minus sign before their number too

Had the game gone another :30, Cortana would have been RIGHT. Despicable to stop playing defense with 3:00 remaining.

Calling a time out to stop the clock before you punt? With a 19-point lead? WHO DOES THAT?!

Evidently, to get under your skin, LOL.

A game in which 67 points was scored was won by only 3. Hardly a win is the way I saw it. Your eyesight may vary.

Well, it ain't like that strategy hasn't been employed by any other team in the league before ... sure, they may have went into that defense a tad bit early for those with a severe heart condition, :lol: ... you just got to sit back and defer to Sean Payton's/Rob Ryan's expertise in these matters. I know if I were up 16pts late in a game with a somewhat porous defense vs a QB with 1400 passing yds/14 touchdowns and a coupla' 6TD performances over his last 4 games, I'd be thinking of a way to just get out of there with a win also, :).

Sometimes you just don't always have the horses to close a game the way you'd like. :neutral:
