Rob Ryan tried yelling, crying to motivate Saints' defense

I've tried crying at them. I've yelled at them, (and) cussed at them. But the bottom line is if you are the coordinator and it's not going well, then you start with you and that's the way it is. That is my fault because right now this defense hasn't played up to par and it is killing us."

Maybe it's not motivation that is the problem. Maybe it's the defensive scheme. It doesn't take a football whiz to see that we went from an aggressive bump-and-run defense last year to a passive zone scheme this year. Why not play in a defense that caters to your players strengths? I don't get it.

Well Rob, you usually get better results when you're an s.o.b. coming in/being the cool guy later on vs being the cool guy coming in/having to be an s.o.b. later on, just sayin' ... way to own up & accept responsibility though, woulda' left out the part about "crying",

Can't cut 'em and that's the problem - the fear of losing their job isn't there...

Player apathy is one of the yields of Loomis' practice of managing the salary cap season to season...

Need a General Manager to complement, challenge Sean Payton rather than a yes man...

Need a comprehensive personnel plan that allows for flexibility of the roster from season to season and sets up leverage for retaining key players...

Don't think that players don't know it will hurt the team salary cap if they're cut - so why do they need to put forth the effort if financial gain is their prima motive?!?

While I recognize that these guys make a lot of money and that the said financial gain is a big motivator - I don't believe for a second that it would outweight their professional pride and the drive to be the best they can be at the game they love to play.

Maybe I'm just naive...

Fin, time for some tough love...

You're naive...

Sadly, many of these guys come from impoverished conditions and once the Big Mo arrives, you can put a fork in 'em - they're done...

The team whiffed in free agency. The top draft pick was a small WR who's on IR. The 2nd rd pick can't get on the field even though the talent at his position is horrible. The country club training camp site fits the softness of the team. Payton lost the team. THEN, you can start talking about RR's failings.

The attitude and results on the field look very similar to the Spags era. I thought I notice it manifest in preseason but wrote it off. I was wrong. We need a new attitude. I find it hard to believe that Payton wants him around next year. Basic fundamentals and attitude would have won us a couple more games alone.

Re: Rob Ryan tried yelling, crying to motivate Saints' defense

I would start with yelling at Vitt and Johnson while working my way to the DB coach. Then I would turn around and FIRE THEIR A$$, they have to go first. Then if the players don't fit, wheel and deal, cut, bench , then draft players that fit the mold, get FA that fit the mold. I'm so sick of trying to play the players to their strength crap, teach them to the scheme. It's hard to believe with the DC's that we have had, recently , Williams, Spags, and now Ryan that our D is not at least consistant by now. I don't believe at all with those DC's track records they are bad at all, but all have a common denominator, Vitt and Johnson , those 2 have seen DC's come and go and are still here. I remember the team quitting on Spags when Payton was suspended also, now their quitting on Ryan and Payton, never ever a good sign.

geeze. were a total train wreck. Get off blocks and tackle. Cover your man and don't let him catch it. How difficult is that? Your all world class athletes. Just do it.

I think thats part of the problem. His players love him. They stand up for him. But he's more of a friend. They're not afraid to disappoint him. Or defy him. These guys have huge incomes. So even though they're friends with Rob, they don't respect him enough to work hard for him.

His players have turned into buddies. And buddies have a sense of entitlement because there's a big difference between working for your boss and working for your bro.

What kind of crying? Did he sob or jst a generic cry? If he tries sobbing maybe that will work?

I've yelled and cried at them too. It hasn't done me any good either.

You know, I wonder sometimes how prevalent this really is in the NFL. I see the new breed of NFL players like Ndamukong Suh, Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, Russell Wilson, RGIII, (the list goes on) et ... and I see guys that come from pretty solid backgrounds ... of course, none of those guys listed have reported having money problems either and I don't disagree that there still aren't players that have to overcome obstacles to an NFL career, just that it's not as common or as big an excuse as it has been in the past,.

All these different speculations on why the D just cant get it together. I have the answer and its easy. Plain and simple, we just aren't good nor have the talent to put it all together.

I cant sit here and put it all non our d. They definitely haven't played up to par but our offense just doesn't look right. Teams are getting the lead early and just running it down our throats. We have to close to the worst starting linebackers in the n.f.l. and I don't even want to think about our D.Bs. with the exception of Lewis. I love that dude.

Re: Rob Ryan tried yelling, crying to motivate Saints' defense

We have no leader on defense beyond Curtis Lofton. I see pretty much everyone else as a "me" player.

Only guys on defense that were starters I want to see back are Lofton, Vaccaro (only because I can see the potential if surrounded by quality guys), Bush (he's a player), Byrd (cause he will be good and we have no choice), Jordan (alot like Vaccaro), Hicks (same thing). Everyone else can be replaced with similar talent with hopefully better attitude and effort.

Our LBer corp is a mess.

Rob it looked like they played for you tonight. But the Bears are a bad team.

Re: Rob Ryan tried yelling, crying to motivate Saints' defense

As much as I believe that the DC has a hand in the problems of the defense, I wish people would get off of his back. I have seen many times that the scheme has put players in the right place and they haven't done what they should have, i.e. Tackle. So while I agree the DC has to scheme better, he can only do so much. The rest is up to the players.
