Saints place Pierre Thomas, Akiem Hicks on IR
 

Why?

The Saints placed tailback Pierre Thomas and defensive end Akiem Hicks on injured reserve on Friday. To fill the open roster spots, club promoted rookie wide receiver Brandon Coleman and second-year linebacker Jerry Franklin from the practice squad.

The moves were disclosed in the league’s daily personnel report.

Neither Thomas nor Hicks were on the Week 17 injury report, but both have dealt ailments in recent weeks, with Thomas enduring rib/shoulder injuries and Hicks having an ankle injury.

The 30-year-old Thomas caught 45 passes for 378 yards and one TD in 11 games for New Orleans. He also rushed 46 times for 222 yards and a pair of scores.

Hicks, 25, started 14-of-15 games this season, notching 42 tackles and two sacks.

The 22-year-old Coleman played collegiately at Rutgers. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Coleman has excellent size for the position.

Franklin, 26, played in seven games for Kansas City earlier this season. The Arkansas product has made 20 regular season appearances, with the other 13 coming with Chicago in 2012 and 2013.

Thomas suffered a rib injury last week against the Atlanta Falcons, while Hicks has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury. Payton said he doesn’t know if either injury is serious enough to require offseason surgery -- especially in Thomas' case.

Need to IR a few more and stuff the roster full of players to auditon for next year. However, we probably come out and try and get Ingrams his 1000, Brees his 5000 and win the game for no reason other than stat padding. Edit to add probably play Gallete the full game to get his bonus. To me all incentive bonus $ should be void once the team is eliminated from post season consideration.

Payton was a QB so if any coach cares about stat padding it would be him.

You know he can't live with being 6-10 either lol.... Imagine that, a 6-10 Saints team when we all thought the superbowl was at our door-step.

I didn't think the Superbowl was ever at our door-step this season! Too many people bought into all the hype as to how the Saints were going the Superbowl. What do you think the rest of the NFL teams were going to do, roll over and let us get to the big one. No! They did exactly what I thought they would do, they watched every bit of game film they could find on the Saints teams, they did their homework on us, wrote new defensive and offensive plays to use against us and then came to the Dome with more passion and spirit and beat us, sometimes with ease!

If we don't get things sorted this off-season then expect more of the same next time around!

Everyone including the players bought into the hype. You're lying if you say otherwise. I think all the hype and even the weakass training camp set the mark for this team day 1, and it was all downhill from there.

Your right it is called game-planning and I thought many times this season we were out game-planned. To me we have lost our edge in coaching and game-planning. It aint working anymore for our Offense and on Defense I don't think we have the ability to exploit another teams offensive weaknesses. Same for ST's. Hopefully this coaching staff takes a very long look in the mirror this offseason as they were at least a very significant problem this year. No doubt we worked hard and looked and lots of film and thought we had good game plans but the results prove otherwise.
