Re: After ‘little things’ went wrong this season for Saints, Sean Payton again vows changes will come
I don't see how bringing in yet another defensive coaching staff will change anything considering the poor talent we have at many positions on our defense.

These position coaches have consistently been awful, and you could say that 2014 was the most talent we had on defense since the Dome Patrol days. We were the paper champs before the season and did nothing but upgrade positions from 2013 to 2014. Injuries hurt but this coaching staff failed to get these guys ready to play which is why we saw no energy every week. You'll ask, "why were we successful other years with this staff?". If you look back at every successful year defensively we have had vets here coaching up the players and motivating them. 2014 was the first year without the veteran leadership and it showed because we don't actually have coaches that teach and motivate. Look at the awful situation with SJB and Corey White; both of these players have said no communication is occurring about their future and don't have a clue what they should be working on other than "getting better". Lastly, when is the last time this staff has developed any players? We have had 5 different defensive coordinators but kept the same positional coaching staff for the last 10 years, how does that make sense? |

You're right, it doesn't make sense. We don't develop players because our defense is a band-aid patchwork year after year. Always seems to be a last minute emergency to plug leaky holes in a porous defense so we grab free agents and veterans to stop them up.
You are correct in that we keep the same position coaches and switch the DC. I don't know how that happens and how we expect change if we continue to do that as an organization. Usually a DC comes in and cleans house if they wish and bring in their own coaches. Unfortunately we've become an AFC team 80's and 90's - all offense and sketchy defense. |
