For me it is the persona most have built around Drew and his love for the saints, the city and the fans. I am not minimizing all that he has done one bit. Just we as fans need a reality check on this persona we have dreamed up.

As silly as it is, most of us have unjustly put him on a pedestal so high that he needs an elevator obviously to reach it.

After all football is a business and the players want their money now. they could careless about guaranteed contracts and life long insurance. Both of which would be huge for the lower range players. Which in collective bargaining must be the minority at 49% or so.

But that would mean the big dogs would have to surrender some bones. That is not going to happen. But yet again they will change the rules to prolong their self indulgent life styles at the risk to teammates and the integrity of the game.

So if they do care about their teammates or the game that much why should we as fans expect anything different.

I like Drew and have no issues with him. I am guilty of holding him to unacceptable standards. After all he is just a millionaire. Once again I am not minimizing all that he has done one bit.

I am just apologizing for unjustly put him up there in the first place.

Now he only needs a step stool to get up on the pedestal. It is not nearly as high as it once was. thus realistic.

This should make it easier for all us to accept them as the football player they are. for that is what they are and nothing more.

i am holding the elevator door just encase he changes his mind.

this was buried in a thread and i want to get input from the site on it

No past Super Bowl without Drew and no future Super Bowl, at least not in the near future, without Drew. And, by the way, he led the Saints to the Championship BEFORE he was paid the big bucks! And, do we even know if he has been asked to restructure and refused? That seems to be the assumption.

Re: OK, so I guess Drew isn't gonna restructure?/[irritated sarcasm]

I meant it as a sarcastic reply to those that hear news about a player and assume that's the only thing that's gonna happen or that the front office isn't working on other players as well.

Re: OK, so I guess Drew isn't gonna restructure?/[irritated sarcasm]

I am sure players in general do care about life long insurance, however, there is none as an NFL football player, so yes, they want all they can get now. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I do not have a problem with Capitalism and a free market place.

As for putting anyone on a pedestal, that is your issue, not mine. I do not put entertainers on pedestals. You have fallen prey to the romanticizing of sports figures by large corporations who want you to see these players as larger than life, and some sort of heroes.

Drew has already said he'd gladly restructure if asked to do so.

Sam Bradford
Matt Stafford
Matt Ryan
Aaron Rodgers

They all have more guaranteed money than Drew Brees.

Quit *****in about how much money he makes.

9 years as the best player on our team (franchise history)

Maybe because they had money to pay other people who slightly contributed?

"Listen, I get compensated very well. I don't take that for granted for one second," Brees said. "But I play this game because I love this game, I love this locker room and I love the opportunity to win a championship."
Yeh, that's OUR QB and glad to have him, he deserves his salary and if Loomis can't get the numbers where they need to be, Brees would restructure without a fight.

shouldn't have to ask, do the right thing Drew!!!

I personally don't want to see you on your back over and over and over next year. Help them get you some protection.

Has anyone actually considered that it well be the front office not wanting to redo hos contract till next year as the team will need the flexibility then. We still have Galette,Lofton,Hawthorne, Bunkley,Evans and Grubbs to restructure this year. Can also extend Cams deal and drop the cap hit.

Well Drew can't force them to restructure his contract.

what was the difference between our 2014 6-10 team and our 11-5 2013 team? If it is a Drew issue?

If Drew is open to restructure why isn't the front office doing it?

Didn't Loomis already say they wouldn't restructure Drew's contract this year?

You have it backwards. Restructuring is the team's last resort. Every restructure helps the player and hurts the franchise. There is little doubt that Brees' agent is begging Loomis for a restructure (which in Brees' case would be an extension), but it is not in the best longterm interest of the team. At least not this year.

For all the media wailing over long term cap hell this team is in a good position cap wise next year. If the big under performing earner are cut we would have holes to fill but would have over $35ml in cap space.

If Colston,Grubbs,Hawthorne,Lofton and Bunkley got cut next summer(if they dont this) then we have $37ml in free cap room and thats with Brees cap hit of $27ml and Evans $10.2.
But Its should be said that Hick,Jordan,Lelito and K.Robinson are all out of contract too.

This is very true, we have to weather the storm this year, but we have to be careful how much we push forward because that could just keep perpetuating the inevitable. At some point we need to feel the pain for one year so that the future is clear.

We don't know if this is Drew's final contract, who's to say he doesn't retire after the length of this deal is done and that's why they haven't added years

Brees recently stated that he intends to keep playing long enough for all of his children to have seen him play and understand what is going on. He said that would be well into his 40's. He has no plans whatsoever to retire. I fully expect him to get an extension next off-season.

Drew is willing to restructure. The FO wants to restructure. It will happen when it is beneficial for both parties. Apparently, now isn't the time to push his money forward. After all the FO wants to extend him but they don't want to get tied too deeply into a contract that may or may not have value longer than a single extension.

How's the season look with Drew or without him, In my opinion we are a competitive team with him. I'm sure the Brees contract sit's on Mickeys desk right next to the Bat Phone.
