New Orleans Saints cut Dannell Ellerbe's base salary by $7.4 million

New Orleans Saints linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, acquired last week in a trade for Kenny Stills, agreed to slice his 2015 base salary by more than $7 million, according to NFLPA records.

Ellerbe's base salary will be $1.1 million instead of $8.5 million in 2015. He also agreed to amend his 2016 salary from $6.45 million to $4.1 million and his 2017 salary from $6 million to $4.1 million, records show. Ellerbe does not appear to have any significant bonuses in 2015, except for $100,000 in what is likely a workout bonus.

blah blah blah

The Saints have $2.89 million in space under the 2015 salary cap, according to the NFLPA. That's enough to add the contract of new running back C.J. Spiller.

Be interested too see what guaranteed money and bonuses are there.

Either way i liked the trade. I really respect the Ravens(not Model) but the way the teams is run and the way they had the vets in the locker room that kept everything in check and kept them hungry and fighting each year. Wether you liked Ray Lewis or not he lead that team well,as did Reed. Im hoping some of that experience rubbed off on Ellerbe and he can take that role with Browner can give this defense some grit. If Fig Newton tried that cr@p he pulled in the endzone last year i have a feeling that he would be picking the grass out his teeth on the next play.

Im really hoping this team starts getting the rep of a nasty team. i don't want to be a team that people like,i want to be a team people ont want to play

It's nice to see Ellerbe excited to play for the Saints and willing to help out to make the team better

If he starts, he either proved his worth, or the Saints missed in the draft. He was quality player for the Ravens but he had alot of talent around him.

I love flying under the radar. Bye wk. 8 they will all be on the bandwagon talking about us putting up # and ruling the division. Ellerby will be a monster. I would love to still draft an ILB to push Hawthorn. Tell the truth McKinney or Perryman next to Ellerbe sounds pretty good to me. Would be tough with a stud NT and ILB'ers like those to run on.

Don't feel bad about the crow. When you just about have to turn over the franchise to right yourself, it really says more about what the team is doing now than it does about the previous years. I like how they're going about rebuilding the team and gathering draft picks, while getting under the cap. In the past it's been about pushing back salaries and holding onto aging players, who later get released because they no longer have any trade value. I'm glad they recognized the downward trend of this team and got pro-active this time.

Before last week, I really thought mgmt had taken a mediocrity is acceptable approach. I'm so happy with what they have done to this point especially landing Unger and more draft picks. Hope they hit on a couple of these picks if they keep them, history shows that this team tends to move around in the draft so I can't wait to see what happens. I was so down after week 17 but right now I'm so pumped for the season to begin and the draft hasn't happened yet

If he doesn't start, then this trade was a waste. Stills obviously pissed SP at some point, but he was was certainly cap-friendly.

Ellerbe was a dud in Miami. But worst case, he's equivalent to Lofton.

Ireland must really trust Ellerbe.

Re: Saints cut Ellerbe's base salary by $7.4 million

Okay, I was incorrect. One good season, one entire season injured:

Quote:

Ellerbe finished his first season in Miami with 101 tackles, 2 INTS, 2 fumbles recovered, and 1 sack as the starting middle linebacker. In 2014, Ellerbe was moved to outside linebacker but suffered a season-ending hip injury in the first quarter of their Week 1 game against New England.
But still, an even swap for Curtis Lofton in my mind. Veteran depth, Super Bowl win, all that stuff helps..

There is one problem with Jeff Ireland the GM. He brings very good expensive players but they don't fit in their scheme. Ellerbe is one, than you have Wallace. Deep threat expensive WR help for dink and dunk "alex smith 2.0" QB.

Re: Saints cut Ellerbe's base salary by $7.4 million

Ellerbe is a veteran coming back to a 3-4 playing on the inside where he belongs according to what I've read. If he can cover better than Lofton then we've addressed a problem area.

Regardless there are several good ILB'ers in the draft and I want two of them. We need to fix our triangle in a 3-4 and get that big NT(Shelton) and both ILB'ers who can play their assignments with their natural skill set. I'm tired of moving players around because they don't exactly fit the role.

#Loomising is real.

So if Ellerbe can replicate even his 2013 season as ILB, we'll be okay.

Draft OLB, ILB, OL and WR baby!!

The title of this thread needs to be changed to Loomis coerces Miami to cut Ellerbe's base salary by $7.4 million.

What a frickin' great move!

Theres a good chance Stephone Anthony will be in the mix. I read we are looking into him pretty seriously.

i am starting to believe he may end up being our pick at 31. looking more and more he will not make it through the 34 defenses picking ahead of us in round two, more teams are really taking a look at him.

Yea,I have a feeling we gonna use our 13th on Oline and our 31st and second rounder on LB's. It would be cool to have him and Beasley playing together in the pros though.

Re: Saints cut Ellerbe's base salary by $7.4 million

Knowing now what we're facing with the cap issue I am all aboard on every trade (Kenny Stills & Jimmy Graham) Ellerbe willing to take a pay cut really make this deal sweet now if he can return to his form when he was in a 3/4 defense with the Ravens that will be the cherry on top. The only question I would like to asnwered, would we been able to sign him when he was cut by Miami and kept Kenny Stills?
