One of the keys about the flurry of moves that have taken place this offseason for the New Orleans Saints is gaining flexibility in the draft.

The team is now up to nine draft picks, the most its had since 2002, and is seemingly in a position to do whatever it wants in the draft. Select nine players and revamp the defense? They can do that. Move up and take a coveted player? That’s on the table as well.

It’s a nice idea to think New Orleans can move all over the board. But the question is just how far it can actually move.

Before most teams make a trade involving picks, they consult a the draft-pick value chart. This chart, which has been around for decades and has been improved upon at various junctures, assesses a numerical value for each draft position in the chart.

The chart most widely used, for instance, gives a value of 3,000 to first-overall pick and goes down from there. If a team wants to trade for that pick, for most general managers to say yes to a deal, the bounty being offered needs to equate to 3,000 or better.

Re: How far can the Saints move up in the draft?

i would look to Chicago at 7
cost us 13 44 and 75 that or a player,
front offices are friendly and they actually appear in worse shape on defense and it would let us pick before the falcons.

more realistic would be the bears trading back into one imo. Forte is a FA next year so they might just move up to grab a top RB. i do not see a trading partner in round 2 for them at this point and we might be the team willing to let them grab Gurley.

god i love draft time. hand grenades come alive and horse shoes just keep piling up

Agreed, I personally wouldn't want us to move up in the draft

We have the chance to get 2 difference makers in the first round

5 picks in the first 80 is damn good, we normally only have 6 picks the entire draft.

I hope we go LB at #13 and OL or WR at #31

With 80% of picks getting signed, giving up two to get one that will likely be very solid, not a bad move. I'm playing devil's advocate here, I hope we keep the picks but odds are we will not from recent history.

Again.

We don't need 9 draft picks. If we come out with 5 impact players between the draft and UDFA then we've done a heck of a job (remember 2006?).

If the player has the grade, go get him

The draft isn't an exact science, you see first round picks going bust nearly every year, whichever way it's done is always a gamble.

And the other big question is - will we have the salary cap space for rookie draft picks and free agents?

Should do
No rush to get that far under cap yet. I reckon they have a agreement in place with Evans.

Im not against trading up but not at 13.

the only way I would agree to move up if there's a Patrick willis type stud to go after. if white or cooper is still on the board I would still not move up for them, the clowns can have one of them.
