My beef with many fans!!
I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about the game of football.
I keep pretty up to date on things. I read countless articles on a variety of football subjects. I can explain in detail what a cover 2, or even cover 3 defense is. In other words, I like the technical side of football. I like to study the complex schemes and really try and understand what's happening on the field. Knowing the technical side of the game is nice!! HOWEVER !! I believe some fans get caught up in that stuff way too much. They get caught up in it so much that they can't see the forest for the trees. Some fans hear the name "West Coast Offense" and they become obsessed with how they think it should work. And when it doesn't work good enough, they start to analyze and determine what the problems are. You'll hear stuff like: A. The QB is making the wrong reads. B. The coach is just terrible at calling plays. C. Some player doesn't fit the system. The list is endless. Believe me!!! And many of these folks are convinced they know exactly what the problems are. It's SO obvious to them. But, hey, that really doesn't bother me. I do that some myself. What I really have a problem with is fans who talk endlessly about the QB and the COACH. And blame just about everything on them. Remember, those folks who usually only blame the QB and the coach are usually those same folks who consider themselves to be very knowledgeable about the technical aspects of the game of football. But boy those trees keep getting in the way of them seeing the forest. They lose sight of minor things ... like the offensive line. Or dropped passes. Or presnap penalties. Or poor tackling. Oh, they notice these things from time to time. But they just can't see past those dang trees. What they fail to do is realize that all those things add up and are usually the MAJOR problem. They see a game where the problem goes a way and they forget about it. But they always see that coach and QB. And to them, that's the problem. That stupid coach and QB. Fire 'em both!! Football still comes down to blocking, tackling, passing, and running. But it doesn't end there. Believe it or not but penalties can be the death of a team. It can create problems so large that it causes very good players to struggle. Same thing with dropped passes, missed tackles, etc., ect... And when you add all of that stuff up, it makes the QB and the coach look like bumbling idiots. Bill Parcells will tell you all about that. I won't lie. I don't think too much of those folks who complain over and over about the coach and the QB and try and pin everything on them. It's foolish!! Sure, you can pin everything on the coach if you want. The coach is the top man and the buck always stops with him. And the QB is boss when he's on the field. Now, how he can get players to quit commiting penalties is beyond me. Can he help? Sure. You betcha!! But he can't force them to. But those fans still blame the QB and the coach for those penalties. While I know I'm not going to get those fans to actually see the forest, I just can't help but to wonder how some fans can watch football for so many years and still understand very little. Why do you keep contradicting yourself from thread to thread. When it is concerning AB, it\'s all about defense, and poor coaching, etc. Then, you will start a thread about Peyton and all the sudden it is all him. He is a choke artist, remember. Which is it? Why doesn\'t your logic apply to him?

The Peyton thing goes back a while to a debate I had with some folks here. Those folks always like to blame Brooks for EVERYTHING and I figure I\'d use their own logic against them. Hey, it\'s hard to prove Peyton doesn\'t choke in the playoffs. It\'s very hard to prove it. Why? Because he has a long history of playing badly in the playoffs. Is it all his fault? NOPE!! But I can sure pin it on him and make one hell of a convincing arguement. Debating on these boards isn\'t easy. You have to use every resource availible to get a point accross to SOME folks. The problem is, not everyone understands what I\'m trying to do. But, I know what I\'m trying to do. And that\'s get SOME folks to wake up and smell the coffee. There are cases where the QB or the coach is most responsible for losing and it comes a time when they need to go. Don\'t get me wrong. I think both play very large roles in a teams success or failure. But, I\'ll be damned if I don\'t look beyond that>>> |

I talk a lot about some folks placing too much blame on the coaches. But that doesn\'t mean I think the coaches are blameless. Take Venturi for example. Venturi\'s insistence on playing a \"soft\" defense is foolish, IMO. I do understand his reasoning. He thinks he doesn\'t have the personel to play a cover 0. Just the thought of playing Fred Thomas and Ashley Ambrose against the top receivers in the league is a scary proposition!! Remember, we didn\'t have McKenzie at the beginning of the season. So, Venturi would rather play a bend but don\'t break defense and hope the opposing offense stalls. But there was just one problem with that theory. WE COULDN\'T STOP THE RUN!! We were just plain terrible at stopping the run and couldn\'t get off the field. Given the fact that our \"bend but don\'t break\" defense was giving up nearly 30-points per game, I would rather lose being aggressive. Hey, things couldn\'t have been any worse. I what really chaps my butt is Venturi has played that same defense for years!! And it never worked!! For some reason unknown to mankind, the defense started playing really aggressive for the last 4 or 5 games. I\'m sure McKenzie played some role in giving them the ability to do so. But it should have been done long ago. There really wasn\'t a whole hell of a lot to lose. If you\'re giving up 30-points per game its time to take risks. What the worst that could have happened? |

You know you couldn\'t live without me here. Who else are you going to battle it out with?? I had a point I was trying to make. My point was that football is really a SIMPLE game and I think some folks make it too complicated. There are only so many things a coach can do with the 11 players on the field. It still comes down to the basics. And the team that makes the less mistakes usually wins. I don\'t think the Saints need a coach that is trying to reinvent the wheel. My knowledge of football is no more than many other folks. And I don\'t know as much as some people. But that really wasn\'t the point I was trying to get across. |
