I'm predicting he won't make much of an impact. He can play the run, but if he gets more than 3 sacks, I'd be surprised.

My overall point is that Dallas could have had him. Word was his preference was to stay there and they made little effort to sign him even though he was at a position of need. They also would have had the best access to his medical records.

I could be wrong, but banking on Spencer would be a mistake. It's a meh signing to me.

Yes micro fracture surgery can take a while to recover. Good thing he's had two years to do it!

Where you're making an assumption here is that Ryan is "banking" on Spencer to be more than be an above average back up. He signed a one year deal. Does that sound like he's the future OLB?

Look, to build his defense Ryan needs guys he can trust, who are familiar with his system and can be leaders in the locker room.

If I didn't know better it almost sound like you're rooting against him.

Reggie Bush took a couple of years to recover from his. The timing may be right for Spencer.

Low risk, high reward -> this year's Champ Bailey

I don't think this has anything to do with Galette. Cutting/trading JG pre-June 1 costs us $10,750,000. I don't see it.

Its simple. Its a 1 year prove it contract.

He's not the answer, he's just good help until we find the answer.

It really depends on where in the joint you get the surgery. During the 2009 season I got injured in May, had micro fracture surgery done almost right away and played again in september. So the healing can be pretty quick. I was 28 back then so no spring chicken either.

$155K impact on #Saints' cap

Now that is a solid signing.

as opposed to last year's gamble, Bailey, that included a 500K signing bonus

Saints sign DE/OLB Anthony Spencer (1 year, $950K; $150K guaranteed): A- Grade
Anthony Spencer hasn't played well since his microfracture knee surgery back in 2013, but perhaps he'll be able to rebound now that he's two years removed from the injury. He'll also be playing under Rob Ryan again, whom he thrived under when Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys; Spencer collected 11 sacks in Ryan's final season in Dallas.

The issue, however is that Spencer turned 31 this offseason. Microfracture surgery is tough to come back from, so that's another hurdle. Still, the Saints aren't risking much, giving the edge rusher just $150,000 guaranteed.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer

The think that excites me the most is that in 2014 he got better and better as the year went on.

That tells me the injury became less and less a factor.

Note: According to PFF stats he played lights out in the playoffs last year.
He led all defenders in QB hurries, in only 2 playoff games.

If this cat is even 90% of his former self, we stole him. At 31 he is on the downside of his career, but 31 isn't over the hill for a LB at all.

The more I read about this signing the more I like it.
