New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints have signed former Dallas Cowboys linebacker/defensive end Anthony Spencer to a one-year contract, the team announced Friday.
Spencer, 31, has spent all eight seasons of his NFL career in Dallas. He was selected in the first round (26th overall) out of Purdue in 2007. Spencer started 61 games for the Cowboys from 2009-2012. Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who had the same role in Dallas from 2011-2012, presided over some of Spencer's best seasons, including his only Pro Bowl appearance in 2012. Spencer was given the Cowboys' franchise tag in 2013, which carried a $9.6 million salary, but he played in only one game before undergoing season-ending knee surgery. With his career in question, Spencer signed a one-year deal with Dallas before the 2014 season, becoming a valuable reserve. He forced two fumbles and scored a touchdown. At 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds, Spencer is sometimes identified as a defensive end, although the Saints introduced him Friday as a linebacker. With the Saints, he could be used in a strong-side linebacker role like the one played by Ramon Humber. He could also be used like Parys Haralson, who was often an extra outside linebacker in run situations. Spencer also has the background to be used as an edge rusher in the mold of Junior Galette. http://imgick.nola.com/home/nola-med...cf7b7b2bcb.jpg Read More |
Re: Anthony Spencer signed
Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy...
Another Broken Down Toy... Hope signing Spencer and Ellerbe is just a smoke screen and that the Saints FO quits f***ing around and drafts some real talent in Vic Beasley and Stephone Anthony... |

Fill the roster predraft and then get the best players you can.
Nothing wrong with this move imo. We need depth to rotate the rushers, worth seeing what the man has left in the tank |

Re: Anthony Spencer signed
As long as they aren't thinking "alright guys, we got that edge rusher thing taken care of now." I'm OK with this. Like Lee said, need depth and I'm sure it's a cheap deal so I think it's worth it if he can come in and log a few quality snaps per game. I remember reading that he's good at setting the edge against the run as well and we can definitely use help there.

SP: Like it? DB: Love it that's how I'm feeling about this signing |
Re: Anthony Spencer signed
With the signing, Galette days of being a saint is being shorten, most definitely if we draft a olb/de in the 1st rd. he most likely will be traded or released during the draft

Re: Anthony Spencer signed
Solid signing, much like the when we signed Parys Haralson, solid veteran who provides depth at the very least.

Re: Anthony Spencer signed
So we get a player Rob Ryan made into a pro bowl 3-4 olb.
One injured season led to two down years and made him an affordable risk worth taking. Valuable veteran leadership in the locker room, understands the scheme. What's not to like? |

I'm not excited about this signing. But I do feel good about it. We are now able to go BPA throughout the draft and don't have to reach for a particular position.

If healthy, it's an A plus signing
If he's still lost a step due to injuries, could be anywhere between a B and an F |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
I'm liking this. We are now at least really addressiing the lb.'er position after years. I also like Spencer, solid rotational depth able to play in different looks.

I actually love the signing. Cheap DE and OLB backup and he's a veteran who can teach the young pups

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
I like it. He still has to work his way onto the field and the roster. He is cheap, and if he is done he will be gone mid camp. It will at least give some of the new guys someone to look to for advice. I think that is the only reason they brought Bailey in last year. I don't think they ever had the intention of him playing. If I remember correctly he didn't make it past first cut.
It wouldn't bother me at all if the Saints signed every turd out there who has a slim possibility of making a difference. As long as they are weeded out by final cuts I don't see the harm. |

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
Spencer is washed up. Look at it this way- Dallas was a team as badly in need of a pass rusher as anyone in the NFL and they didn't try to hard to keep him. Don't expect much in this move. Victor Butler all over again.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
Its because he was coming off of injury and misused last year in Dallas. Is he the team's savior, I doubt it but he's an upgrade to what the team had last year on obvious passing downs

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
Anthony Spencer signs for what? waiting to see
coming off a micro fracture of the knee (2013) after getting tagged($10.63)? understandable but not a huge factor Lets look at all our long deep top notch list of DE/OLB already on the team? opppsss read the warning sign. NO DIVING! SHALLOW DEPTH Money is a huge factor in my level joy with this signing. but given the other issues i am cool with it. once again the cap hit is what? |

Far from washed up. I'd argue that if healthy, he's just as serviceable (maybe more so than Harralson) So you're predicting Spencer will suffer season ending injuries in training camp? |

I'm predicting that his speed which made him a guy who could get to the QB is diminished. I'm predicting he won't make much of an impact. He can play the run, but if he gets more than 3 sacks, I'd be surprised. My overall point is that Dallas could have had him. Word was his preference was to stay there and they made little effort to sign him even though he was at a position of need. They also would have had the best access to his medical records. I could be wrong, but banking on Spencer would be a mistake. It's a meh signing to me. |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer
If we go into next season with Haralson and Spencer backing up Galette and another OLb we are in far better shape. Keep the rotation going with the rushers and NT and we should look far fresher and get to the QB more often
