New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I like it. He still has to work his way onto the field and the roster. He is cheap, and if he is done he will be gone mid camp. It will at least give some of the new guys ...

I like it. He still has to work his way onto the field and the roster. He is cheap, and if he is done he will be gone mid camp. It will at least give some of the new guys someone to look to for advice. I think that is the only reason they brought Bailey in last year. I don't think they ever had the intention of him playing. If I remember correctly he didn't make it past first cut.

It wouldn't bother me at all if the Saints signed every turd out there who has a slim possibility of making a difference. As long as they are weeded out by final cuts I don't see the harm.

Spencer is washed up. Look at it this way- Dallas was a team as badly in need of a pass rusher as anyone in the NFL and they didn't try to hard to keep him. Don't expect much in this move. Victor Butler all over again.

Far from washed up. I'd argue that if healthy, he's just as serviceable (maybe more so than Harralson)

So you're predicting Spencer will suffer season ending injuries in training camp?

I agree. I believe he would start over Harrison in a competition for the spot. I'd still love to have another, young OLB and ILB, but I'll wait and see what happens.

I'm predicting that micro-fracture is a difficult surgery for a guy his age to recover from.

I'm predicting that his speed which made him a guy who could get to the QB is diminished.

I'm predicting he won't make much of an impact. He can play the run, but if he gets more than 3 sacks, I'd be surprised.

My overall point is that Dallas could have had him. Word was his preference was to stay there and they made little effort to sign him even though he was at a position of need. They also would have had the best access to his medical records.

I could be wrong, but banking on Spencer would be a mistake. It's a meh signing to me.

Yes micro fracture surgery can take a while to recover. Good thing he's had two years to do it!

Where you're making an assumption here is that Ryan is "banking" on Spencer to be more than be an above average back up. He signed a one year deal. Does that sound like he's the future OLB?

Look, to build his defense Ryan needs guys he can trust, who are familiar with his system and can be leaders in the locker room.

If I didn't know better it almost sound like you're rooting against him.

Reggie Bush took a couple of years to recover from his. The timing may be right for Spencer.

It really depends on where in the joint you get the surgery. During the 2009 season I got injured in May, had micro fracture surgery done almost right away and played again in september. So the healing can be pretty quick. I was 28 back then so no spring chicken either.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign LB Anthony Spencer

Its because he was coming off of injury and misused last year in Dallas. Is he the team's savior, I doubt it but he's an upgrade to what the team had last year on obvious passing downs
