ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS Tall with a thick lower body and well-proportioned frame. Has good knee bend and movement for a power player. Shows some bounce in his feet. Gains plenty of ground on kick slide but keeps his weight under him. Able to transition from pass set to power step inside to close down inside moves. Hand placement generally good in run and pass. Plays with a strong, wide base. Above-average understanding of protections. Instinctive against twists and reacts quickly to them. Able to drop his anchor in pass protection. Powerful drive blocker with explosive hips. Plays with leverage and leg drive to mow down overmatched defenders. Punishes defensive tackles when asked to secure with a down-block. Once he locks out, has the anchor and power to end his opponent's chances.

WEAKNESSES Left tackle displaying some edge fear. Technique breaks down when facing wide rushers with juice off the snap. Opens up prematurely and turns into a lunger. Waist-bender. Will lead with head and hands, hoping to land a strike and engulf the edge speed. Needs to improve angle of pass sets against speed. Has direction-change issues when moving in space. Gets stuck to first block too long, allowing second-level target to escape over top. Has issues with sustaining blocks on second level and doesn't always work feet to improve positioning when blocking laterally.

DRAFT PROJECTION Round 1

NFL COMPARISON Andrew Whitworth

BOTTOM LINE Big and powerful with a right tackle's play strength and demeanor, but enough foot quickness to protect on the left side. Peat has the physical tools to be an upper-echelon run blocker with pass-protection ability, but he needs to improve his technique in order to protect with consistency. Peat has been well-coached and is one of the most game-ready offensive linemen in this year's draft.

It is the right pick. The people complaining won't be complaining once the season starts.

That wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be.

makes me sick what a wasted pick South Terrebonne Highschool could run over our defense

I like the pick,Brees needs more time and the running game has to improve. Unfortunately the Saints have many more holes to fill.

I can deal with the OT. I would have blew a fuse if we took a WR. We still have plenty of picks to address our other needs.

ok tell me how he fits a zone blocking scheme? i do not get this pick. well could have been worse i guess. typical saints pick a head scratch-er.

Beasely will eat this kid alive for a few years until or if he improves. or the saints change blocking schemes

I better not hear we could have traded down and did not do it.

so yet another pick to sit back and watch to see what happens.

Re: Saints select offensive lineman Andrus Peat with the 13th pick

Total breakdown: Saints draft OT Andrus Peat in first round
Mike Triplett, ESPN New Orleans Saints reporter
The pick: Andrus Peat, offensive tackle, Stanford

My take: This was a curveball – but only because Peat is seen as a left tackle prospect, and the New Orleans Saints are already set with a young left tackle they like a lot in Terron Armstead. The Saints have also invested long-term in veteran right tackle Zach Strief, whose future could be in doubt unless one of these guys will make an unfamiliar move to guard. However, it’s hard to argue with shoring up an offensive line that has been in decline over the past two years. Drew Brees was sacked 37 times in 2013 and 29 in 2014 – the two highest totals of his career. The Saints still have four more picks in the top 78 to address a defense that badly needs it.

Everything but a mean streak?: Analysts are a bit mixed on Peat (ESPN’s Todd McShay ranks him 11th overall, while Mel Kiper Jr. has him 26th). No one argues with his rare combination of size, athleticism and quickness, though. Peat moves very well for his 6-foot-7, 313-pound, long-armed frame. And the Saints’ pass-heavy/screen-heavy offense has always exploited athletic offensive linemen. The only knock on Peat among scouting analysts seems to be that he needs to play with more consistent power and more of a mean streak. Says McShay: “We would have liked to have seen more of a nasty side from him at Stanford.”

Smooth transition: Both Peat and Stanford coach David Shaw suggested Peat should have a smooth transition into the Saints’ West Coast-based offense since he played a pro-style West Coast offense at Stanford. Peat said he played left tackle his whole career in college, starting the past two years. He said he has never played guard but would be willing and able to play wherever the Saints want to put him on the line. Peat is the first offensive lineman drafted by the Saints in Round 1 since Jammal Brown in 2005 – the year before coach Sean Payton and Brees arrived.
