Drew Brees donates $1 million to Purdue football program

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has donated $1 million to his alma mater Purdue's football program, the school announced on Friday morning.

The donation will help with the school's Football Master Plan, which was designed by athletics director Morgan Burke and head football coach Darrell Hazell to create a championship-caliber program. It consists of five points: roster development, recruiting, fan engagement, university support and facilities. Each of those topics was discussed in depth last week at a three-day summit involving university officials - including president Mitch Daniels, board of trustees chairman Tom Spurgeon and vice chairman Mike Berghoff - Burke, Hazell and members of the football coaching staff; Brees and other former football players; and additional alumni and supporters.

"We care so much about Purdue University," Brees said in a statement released by the school. "Purdue has meant so much to me, and it has provided so many things. From the education I received and playing for coach Joe Tiller, to winning a Big Ten championship and going to the Rose Bowl, to the relationships I was able to form with many of my teammates and meeting my beautiful wife ... we are so blessed and so thankful.

W.T. Sherman is my favorite General. After all he did order Atlanta to be burned to the ground.

A nice little tax write off. Good for Purdue!

I don't think it was just for a tax write off. It Always sounds like he really cares about that program.

Awesome, did he then proceed to pelt some woman in the face multiple times with his belt buckle? I'm just curious.

Re: Drew Brees donates $1 million to Purdue football program

Purdue is competing with Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn St not to mention IU?!?

One Million is nothing in that fight; he'd do better to sign on as a lifetime scout, ambassador of the school...

Give the one million to a direct relief charity and not a Management Charity (i.e. United Way, Relay for Life) that spends money on salaries for professional fundraisers...

... or, after pelting some woman in the face multiple times with his belt buckle, did the alleged perpetrator donate $1 million dollars to his alma mater? (I didn't know what incident you were referring to & looked it up, ).

Re: Drew Brees donates $1 million to Purdue football program

I think this is just the first step, he is probably playing longball towards getting a building or facility on the campus named after him and his family. That's what I would be shooting for, if I were him. A million here, two million there, $500K another year....it all adds up. Next thing you know they are cutting the ribbon on the Brees Football & Baseball Facility, or Brees Library, or Brees Dream Foundation Student Union Center, even Drew Brees Stadium in another couple of decades. It could happen. Brees has already transcended way beyond worrying about money for himself or his family, now he is probably working on building up his overall legacy and family heritage now for the future.
