Patrick Surtain seeks trade

The Miami Dolphins have granted three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain permission to seek a trade, according to his agent, Gary Uberstine.

"I've come to realize, it's a business," Surtain said. "I've had seven great years in Miami, but I think it's time for a change."

Surtain, sensing the team may not be able to structure a long-term contract extension to keep him, asked Monday to be traded. Coach Nick Saban responded by granting him permission to talk with other clubs about such a move. Surtain could represent a strong value for the Dolphins on the trade market.

Good find Gumbo....Maybe he wants to come back home to finish up his career? Please come home

Unfortunately Boo, we can not afford him unless he took about half of what he is expected to make, which is upper 8 mil next year. A more likely choice would be Samari Rolle after he is cut and we can bid for him. Surtain is way too expensive. Unless we get them to take like Sully and a 2nd, but they are trying to cut payroll.

It was just a thought. Maybe renegotiate his contract before the trade and give hime more guaranteed money. Not Benson style, but man it sounds good. Rolle would be a good addition also. I have no problems with him either. I really like Surtain\'s play and being that he\'s a hometown guy, I am going for him.

Being that its the Saints, we won\'t get a real area of need as usual.

I don\'t know where anyone gets that we can\'t afford Surtain?

Our cap numbers look about as good as any team.

If the Redskins can constantly sign all those big name guys..

If the Eagles can sign Terrell Owen AND Kearse..

The Pats can sign Dillion.....

Then I see no reason we CAN\'T afford Surtain..

The only question is are the Saints \"willing\" to spend the money?

No boo I agree it is a good idea. But what would we trade for him? From what I understand, we have roughly 11 mil in cap space to spend. This is without trades and with current salaries and what not. Contrary to an unpopular belief, we are not in this great cap position as some would want us to believe. Here\'s a current projection I found.

http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp

Now even if we free up some payroll, someone tell me how we can afford to add EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS, close to nine to that. Unreal. Maybe he will work a new deal, but that still brings him in at around 5 or 6 mil. No way. We can draft a corner ont he second day or go for Rolle or Ken Lucas. Cap money doesn\'t grow on trees.

You know, the \"cap\" is a funny thing.

It can be manipulated is so many ways.

You can restructure contracts and free up cap-space for a couple of years.

For example: We could sign Deuce to a big contract this year and actually free up some cap space by giving him a big signing bonus and make his yearly salary \"cap friendly.\"

That\'s just one way of manipulating the cap numbers.

Bottom Line: If we want him, we can afford him..

But, like I said.... Are the Saints \"willing\" to do what\'s necessary?

Dude, I asked you not to respond to me, but I guess it can\'t be avoided, so here goes. Let\'s look at what you first said.

Wrong by a long shot, so as I was speaking to SOMEONE ELSE, you respond with this.

But if we have as much cap room as \"any other team\" why do we need to manipulate? This is why I will not get into disagreements with you any more. Your views are at best uninformed. Please do not respond to me any more. Seriously.

nce of the dolphins-but who is Surtain and why would you want him?

I\'m guessing he is a pro-bowl CB....?

if this guy is any good that may not be a bad deal.

Surtain is definitely as good a corner as there is out there baron, but his price is too high and they will not take AB cause the only reason they are trying to trade him is to cut payroll. Now AB does not make as much as he does, but that will put us in a bad position with the cap. And if he redoes a deal to come here, why wouldn;t he redo a deal to stay there? It just doesn\'t work.

I was looking at our cap number as of July 15, 04. We were 11 million under the cap at that time. We still had to sign rookies so we were probably left with 6 million or so. MM may have decreased that a bit more, say, by another 1 million. Thus, we were left with 5 million in cap room.

Now, this is all speculation, but maybe we can learn something. If I understand where the cap number comes from, it is the actual figure that each team receives from the sharing of TV revenue. Therefore, Benson doesn\'t have to generate any money whatsoever to pay the full cap. He gets a check for that. Where does the cap room go if not spent on players? In his pocket.

If that is a correct way of analyzing the way the cap works, then is anyone starting to figure out why we never go after bigtime FAs? Why Loomis, a reknowned capologist, is one of Benson\'s closet buddies?

So Benson gets 20 mil from the state, 5 mil from the cap he didn\'t use, plus all the profits generated from everything else after he pays for the staff and office personnel. I don\'t have any idea how much the profits might have been, but Benson might have easily cleared 35-40 million or more last year. In effect the state\'s payments are doubling his profits - apparently he can\'t subsist on a measley 20 million.

Why did I post this here? This particular CB wants more than the 6+ million he is already shceduled to make. Now, does anyone still think we\'re about to spend 7 or 8 million on this one guy?

saintswhodi --

First off, I wasn\'t talking to you.

I was responding to Boogro:

So, you need to go check yourself, saintwhodi!!

And another thing. I started this damn thread and I\'ll say whatever the heck I want.

Now go play with someone else. I tired of you a long time ago..

Hmm, I missed that in the forum rules.

So if we start a thread, we can really say anything? :nono:

Since Boogro didn\'t say we can\'t afford him and I did, well you make the call. I would get tired of someone making me look silly also so no problem there.

We\'ll, ANYTHING was a stretch on my part... ;)

But I will talk about the \"cap\" or ANY other thing that is Saints or football related.

Beleive me, I know what the rules are. And I follow them very closely.

But, I kind of fell of the horse by responding to saintwhodi.

I guess everyone has a breaking point. Or is that boiling point?

Anyway, I\'m over it.

I\'m sure me and saintwhodi will be the best of friends one day.

Just look at myself, WhoDat, and Gator.. We were fierce enemies back in the day.... :P

Oh, and me and BrooksMustGo went a few rounds ourselves.
