Patrick Surtain seeks trade

The Miami Dolphins have granted three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain permission to seek a trade, according to his agent, Gary Uberstine.

"I've come to realize, it's a business," Surtain said. "I've had seven great years in Miami, but I think it's time for a change."

Surtain, sensing the team may not be able to structure a long-term contract extension to keep him, asked Monday to be traded. Coach Nick Saban responded by granting him permission to talk with other clubs about such a move. Surtain could represent a strong value for the Dolphins on the trade market.

Unfortunately Boo, we can not afford him unless he took about half of what he is expected to make, which is upper 8 mil next year. A more likely choice would be Samari Rolle after he is cut and we can bid for him. Surtain is way too expensive. Unless we get them to take like Sully and a 2nd, but they are trying to cut payroll.

It was just a thought. Maybe renegotiate his contract before the trade and give hime more guaranteed money. Not Benson style, but man it sounds good. Rolle would be a good addition also. I have no problems with him either. I really like Surtain\'s play and being that he\'s a hometown guy, I am going for him.

Being that its the Saints, we won\'t get a real area of need as usual.

I don\'t know where anyone gets that we can\'t afford Surtain?

Our cap numbers look about as good as any team.

If the Redskins can constantly sign all those big name guys..

If the Eagles can sign Terrell Owen AND Kearse..

The Pats can sign Dillion.....

Then I see no reason we CAN\'T afford Surtain..

The only question is are the Saints \"willing\" to spend the money?

No boo I agree it is a good idea. But what would we trade for him? From what I understand, we have roughly 11 mil in cap space to spend. This is without trades and with current salaries and what not. Contrary to an unpopular belief, we are not in this great cap position as some would want us to believe. Here\'s a current projection I found.

http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/numbers.asp

Now even if we free up some payroll, someone tell me how we can afford to add EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS, close to nine to that. Unreal. Maybe he will work a new deal, but that still brings him in at around 5 or 6 mil. No way. We can draft a corner ont he second day or go for Rolle or Ken Lucas. Cap money doesn\'t grow on trees.

You know, the \"cap\" is a funny thing.

It can be manipulated is so many ways.

You can restructure contracts and free up cap-space for a couple of years.

For example: We could sign Deuce to a big contract this year and actually free up some cap space by giving him a big signing bonus and make his yearly salary \"cap friendly.\"

That\'s just one way of manipulating the cap numbers.

Bottom Line: If we want him, we can afford him..

But, like I said.... Are the Saints \"willing\" to do what\'s necessary?

Dude, I asked you not to respond to me, but I guess it can\'t be avoided, so here goes. Let\'s look at what you first said.

I don\'t know where anyone gets that we can\'t afford Surtain?

Our cap numbers look about as good as any team.
Wrong by a long shot, so as I was speaking to SOMEONE ELSE, you respond with this.

You know, the \"cap\" is a funny thing.

It can be manipulated is so many ways.
But if we have as much cap room as \"any other team\" why do we need to manipulate? This is why I will not get into disagreements with you any more. Your views are at best uninformed. Please do not respond to me any more. Seriously.

I\'m guessing he is a pro-bowl CB....?

Brooks and get Surtain and their 2nd rounder
if this guy is any good that may not be a bad deal.
