Five potential NFL salary cap casualties this preseason
Worth a look if he is released?
Vernon Davis, tight end, San Francisco 49ers The 31-year-old tight end is coming off of a disastrous season that saw him dump his all-time career lows in every receiving category. Davis was only able to manage 26 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns last year. Sadly, the two scores came in Week 1. After that, the injury-riddled tight end was barely noticeable in the team’s offense. The 49ers reportedly had an interest in new Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas over the spring (h/t ninersnation.com). Had a deal been struck, Davis would surely have gotten the boot. Whether the 49ers will keep him around to play out the last year of his contract will be something to keep an eye on. In addition to adding two tight ends in the draft, former second-round pick Vance McDonald sits behind Davis on the depth chart. There is talent here; it just remains to be seen whether Davis can return to pre-2014 form. Five potential NFL salary cap casualties this preseason |

Even w losing Jimmy Graham, I think we're in pretty good shape at TE. Hill is coming along nicely and Watson still has good skills with a lot of experience and leadership. Davis would be a distraction.

I like Hill and Watson . Both still are a passing threats that can actually block ok. They also can probably make it through the season without a major injury.

Davis would be an upgrade. He would also shine with Brees. Someone will pay him more than the Saints could.
