‘We are going to get a chance to see him’

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Jairus Byrd, the Saints’ prized free agent a year ago, still has not taken the field for the morning session of any practice during training camp.

Byrd, who is trying to regain his old form after a season-ending knee injury last year, has been available for a few of the team’s walkthrough sessions in the afternoon.

Saints coach Sean Payton, who does not comment on injuries at this time of the season, has not revealed Byrd’s injury, and he declined a question about whether it was the same knee.

The Saints have said all along they do not expect Byrd’s ailment to be serious. The veteran safety is on the physically unable to perform list but went through OTAs and the team’s mandatory minicamp.

“I think he is progressing well,” Payton said. “I think sooner than later we are going to get a chance to see him — and at the same time, we are going to be smart.”

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.

Smart would have been not committing that much cap to a player that is going to end up playing for less than half the games for which he was contracted...

Thats hindsight. No one knew he was going to miss the majority of games his 1st year.

I'd say it was a very risky move by the front office at best.
Byrd's best year was his rookie season in '09 with a ton of INT's, but he ended that season on IR, but got nominated for the pro-bowl. He had solid years in '10-11, but he was hurt in 2012 and 2013 with limited play.

With his performance dropping off or non-existent for (now) 3 straight seasons tells me he has this one last chance to shine bright or we just wasted a bunch of money. A HUGE deal for a player who has barely seen the field. Really think we should have signed a d-lineman or o-linemen - for freaking 6-year $56 million contract. That's unreal for a player that hasn't produced the past couple of seasons.

I'm a little concerned.

He only missed 5 games in 5 years with the Bills and had 9 picks his last 2 seasons.

And he hasn't made the big money yet. If he crashes and burns he probably won't see very much of that money. His last 4 years are 32 million just in base salary. He'll restructure or he'll never see that money.

Like always, I love to be wrong when it is beneficial for us. This just has a bad feel, a very bad feel. I think he will be pup until after week 6, which means that is at least 14 games in 2 seasons, yikes... and at some point he has to work into a position that requires the people to have a feel for each other. I am worried. I hope I am worried for no reason, but I have seen this story before.... and what do you want SP to say??

And contrary to popular belief I have had a chance to see him, he's in street clothes on the sideline daily

Your team stinks

I'm never been big on handing out huge contracts, in general, unless it's just an absolute star. Even then I don't want so much money committed to a couple guys that there's nothing left to fill the roster out with any quality players. That being said, though, we can't sit here and say they shouldn't have given the money to a guy who was going to be injured, when no one could have seen that coming.

It speaks more to the overall risk of paying out big contracts in a sport like football. But since we know teams will continue to do this, you just have to hope nothing bad happens.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
