smoot definitely out there now-

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The unprecedented size of the franchise tag for cornerbacks, announced yesterday at the NFL Players Association's annual news conference, ensures the Washington Redskins won't place the tag on cornerback Fred Smoot.
It wasn't clear in recent weeks how seriously the Redskins considered the option as team officials played coy and coach Joe Gibbs repeatedly said such discussions were yet to be held. However, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said last night Smoot definitely won't get the tag at a record $8.816 million.

8.8mil for cb's!? my how the world has changed, rb's are 6mil this year.

Gives us a decent shot at Smoot. What if we pulled a trade with the Redskins like Denver did for Portis? Give them Howard after we tag him, and the Redskins give us Smoot and a pick. But that would be their 1 and 2 corners gone in consec years. Kinda shows what not managing the cap does to your team. Maybe Samari Rolle could be a cheaper option.

coming in from the draft smoot wanted to prove something-i don\' t think it would be wise to pick him up for that type of contract.

If we were to get him, we would not pay him that much. He has NO contract right now, so there is no \"type\" of contract to pick up at this point. If he were to be an ass and demand a lot, we can just say no thank you and not do the trade. But just like Portis and Bailey, an agreement will be made on salary before the trade ever goes through, if it goes through.

I\'d be happy to have Smoot, but that type of contract is simply ridiculous. He\'s a good corner, but not nearly worth what he\'s demanding.

Ask yourself how often you sat around wishing we had Fred Smoot on our squad before he became a free agent. He\'s not that great ... he\'s simply the biggest FA name out there. And, because of that, someone will no doubt overpay for him (remember Grant Wistrom last year?). I don\'t want us to be the team who overpays.

But, this adds intrigue to the Darren Howard situation. I don\'t think there are alot of top notch, young pass rushers on the FA block this year. We might score big if we\'re willing to deal a bit.

It didn\'t say Smoot was asking for that much, it said that is what he would get paid if he is franchised. A deal can be worked out for less than what the franchise mark would be, which is what hopefully we would be able to do by trading Howard to them. If he wants anywhere near that neighborhood though, like I said hell no and we try for Samari Rolle.

well it would depend on what we could sign him for and i think we can look at that after horn and deuce. if we could do something with howard for him and get him into a decent contract it would be worth it. but not for 8 milion a year. now i know thats not what hes asking but hes going to get close to that from someone. i just dont think you pay that for the guy

Running backwards and reacting to other players cuts and streaks instead of knowing where he\'s going... I\'m sure his hamstring would love that. :)

The Saints should go after Patrick Surtain instead of Smoot. Miami gave him permission to seek a trade. Besides he is a Louisiana boy any way right?

I think both these guys are going to cost more than we can afford. Whether there\'s room or not, Benson isn\'t likely to use all of the cap room.

If you\'ve been paying attention the last couple of years, you\'ll understand this. It\'s certainly something that can help the team, but I would be shocked for the org to make such a bold move.

Time will tell but don\'t get your hopes up too high. It\'ll only lead to you expressing greater anxiety over this in the future when they both go elsewhere.

I think the better move here is to resign McKenzie and pick up another CB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft. Surtain, Smoot, and Rolle are just going to want too much money for a position that this staff has never being willing to pay.

forget smoot... he\'s all bark, no bite... he\'s not worth the asking price of 14 guaranteed million dollars... i say bring in anthony henry, ken lucas, or woodson from oakland... i doubt any of these three, which seem to be the best corners available in FA, will get any consideration from the saints, due to the fact that the car salesman would rather not spend money than put a good team on the field. another CB, rossum from atlanta, should be brought in as a KR/PR.

from washington post today-

The Redskins have long been at an impasse with Smoot over the size of his signing bonus, and there is a sense among many at Redskins Park that he will depart as a free agent.
Gibbs is also optimistic that wide receiver Rod Gardner will be dealt next month when the trading period begins. Gardner\'s agent, Joel Segal, was granted permission to seek deals and spoke with Redskins salary cap manager Eric Schaffer several times recently to report outside interest, Gibbs said.
\"There seems to be some interest there, and there should be,\" Gibbs said. \"He\'s a good player.\"
Tampa Bay is expected to make a push for Gardner, and Baltimore could as well, with the Redskins likely receiving a mid-round draft pick in return.

----mid round for gardner sounds like a deal. he is a big guy known for making catches in traffic (a nice contrast to current n.o. group). he has only missed 3 games going into his fifth season. at 28 he could be ready for bigtime after being stuck in the woeful skins offense. good replacement for pathon or (gulp) horn if his demands are too high.

didn\'t seem like there was a dearth of cornerbacks the last few years? both veterans and draft classes not so deep. more this year in both than in several past years combined. look at this list-
charles woodson, oak, likely to not be tagged this year
ty law, ne, unless he takes a mega pay cut to stay
patrick surtain, mia, mia ready to trade
fred smoot, wash, wants mega signing bonus
gary baxter, balt, good but maybe better as safety
ken lucas, sea, solid starter
samarai rolle, ten, looking like a cap casulaty
andre dyson, ten, if not one then the other gone
anthony henry, clev, decent player overlooked on this team
allen rossum, atl, labeled cb but a premier kr

in the draft i have this list pegged at 1-2 rd quality-
antrel rolle, mia
pacman jones, wv
justin miller, clemson
carlos rogers, aub
marlin jackson, mich
brandon browner, ore st
corey webster, lsu

quite a list compared to past years. cb doesnt look like the must-need it has been like last spring. as inexperienced as fakhir is tho i wouldnt be disappointed if another top cover guy was added to the fold.

Now that Philadelphia has designated Corey Simon its franchise player, the top spot belongs to Williams. He\'s big, he\'s productive and he\'s perfectly suited for clubs playing the 3-4 defense. The only downside: He turns 32 this season. Williams had a solid year with the Bills, with 51 tackles, 2½ sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. He\'s this year\'s Ted Washington, and teams eager to plug the middle of their defenses can\'t help but be interested.

I didn\'t want Pace anyway. Maybe I\'m just biased because he has played for the Rams.

Walter Jones is going to be interesting in the situation Seattle is in. My guess is they\'ll tag Jones as well and Hasselbeck will re-sign out of loyalty to Holmgren. Alexander will test the market but may give Seattle a chance to match.

And we still need a better LT.

The Post has learned that two-time Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart is considering attempting to qualify for the supplemental draft, which would allow him to play in the NFL this fall. Leinart would either have to graduate USC in May or drop out of school to qualify, according to Greg Aiello, the league\'s VP of public relations.
\"The purpose of the supplemental draft is not a means for players to avoid the regular draft,\" Aiello said. \"You have to qualify.\"
Should Leinart enter the supplemental draft, which would be held in July, the 49ers would have the best chance at the top pick, but it would not be guaranteed. The league would conduct a weighted lottery with teams divided into three categories — those with six or fewer wins, non-playoff teams and playoff teams.
A Southern Cal spokesman told The Post that Leinart, who lost offensive coordinator Norm Chow to the NFL\'s Titans, has alerted the school that he didn\'t plan to graduate until after the fall semester.
STEELERS WANT HOUSH
The Steelers already have a replacement in mind for free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress, whom they do not plan to re-sign — Cincinnati\'s T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Pittsburgh believes the H-Man can be just as good a downfield threat as Burress, and will certainly come cheaper. His dependable hands and selfless attitude make him a perfect fit for the Steelers\' offense.
GRIESE WON\'T BE EASY
In Tampa, there\'s no doubt the Buccaneers want to keep quarterback Brian Griese on board, but with the club an astounding $15 million over the salary cap, it might prove impossible. The Bucs will certainly need Griese\'s blessing to restructure his deal since the former Michigan signal-caller has a cap value of more than $8 million this coming season and a roster bonus of $6 million due March 1.
Coach Jon Gruden is practically desperate to retain Griese, who completed 69.3 percent of his passes and threw for 20 TDs last season, because \'03 third-round pick Chris Simms is still viewed as a project. One Tampa source told The Post, \"There\'s no way in the world\" the Bucs could make the playoffs next year if Simms is the starter.
If Griese stays in Tampa, he could be throwing to Rod Gardner. The Redskins expect to unload the unproductive Gardner no later than draft day for a second- or third-round pick and the Bucs seem the likely destination for the former Clemson star.

Simon still can sign with another team, but the Eagles would have the opportunity to match the offer or be compensated with two first-round picks. They also can test Simon\'s trade value while he is under that designation.

The latter ploy is becoming more popular. Wide receiver Peerless Price, cornerback Champ Bailey and safety Tebucky Jones were franchise players who were traded in the past two seasons. Candidates for the same fate this year include Seattle running back Shaun Alexander, Indianapolis running back Edgerrin James, St. Louis offensive tackle Orlando Pace and New York Jets defensive end John Abraham.

Alexander\'s situation bears watching because he\'s one of the Seahawks\' three offensive pillars, along with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and offensive tackle Walter Jones, whose contracts are up -- for an organization still searching for a new general manager, no less. Seattle needs to lock up Hasselbeck soon if it wants some leverage with Alexander, who already is being mentioned as a target for all that salary-cap room in Philly.

Maybe the most-watched offseason saga will be the status of Minnesota wide receiver Randy Moss, who reportedly is on the trading block and has no less than four teams (Arizona, Baltimore, Oakland and the Jets) interested in taking on the balance of an eight-year, $75 million contract signed in 2001.

Although trades have been rare (and in most cases, difficult to consummate) in the cap era, look for Miami running back Ricky Williams, Buffalo running back Travis Henry, Cincinnati quarterback Jon Kitna and Washington receiver Rod Gardner to find new homes via trades, the way former Cincinnati tailback Corey Dillon did with New England (for a measly second-round pick) last spring.

---just blurbs here n there i find interesting...

From the Detroit newspaper-

...That means an open competition for Harrington in training camp?

\"Sure, depending on who you would get -- who\'s out there that\'s going to compete with him,\" Mariucci said. \"If there\'s a guy that\'s good enough to compete with Joey or beat out Joey or be his backup, that will sort out.\"

There isn\'t an all-star cast of quarterbacks who will be free agents.

At the top of the list is San Diego\'s Drew Brees. All indications are that the Chargers will designate him their franchise player by the Feb. 22 deadline. Matt Hasselbeck, modestly successful in Seattle, is next. Others included Pittsburgh\'s Charlie Batch, a former Lion, Kelly Holcomb of Cleveland, Kurt Warner of the Giants and Vinny Testaverde of Dallas.

Other candidates could be released either after March 1 or June 1, depending on their contract status. Rich Gannon of Oakland, Brad Johnson of Tampa Bay and Jeff Garcia of Cleveland -- Mariucci\'s former quarterback in San Francisco -- could be in that group.

Gannon, Garcia and Batch finished the 2004 season on injured reserve. Warner was benched after nine games, when the Giants had a 5-4 record and were still in playoff contention, in favor of rookie Eli Manning. Holcomb is a 63 percent passer for his career, but has started only 13 games in nine seasons.

One player to watch: Bengals backup Jon Kitna. He\'s happy in Cincinnati, has a great relationship with starter Carson Palmer and has a year left on his contract. The word during Super Bowl week in Jacksonville, Fla., was that Kitna is not likely to depart Cincinnati unless he has a rock-solid promise that he can compete for the starting job. If the Lions work a deal with the Bengals, then the fight is on between Harrington and Kitna for the starting job.

from mike detillier-

Last February, the Washington Redskins tagged All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey their franchise player, and then dealt him, along with a second-round choice, to the Denver Broncos in exchange for halfback Clinton Portis.

Many people around the NFL feel as if the New Orleans Saints will do the same thing with Howard.

Sources inside the organization feel coach Jim Haslett would love to keep Howard on the squad, but with a $7.8 million price tag, it seems more likely the team will try and trade Howard and acquire a proven veteran player and another high draft choice.

Howard has been a very solid defensive end for the Saints since coming into the league in 2000.

But with a talented duo of Will Smith and Charles Grant waiting in the wings and Howard’s history of injuries, the Saints may just be playing the poker game in order to get a sweet deal for Howard.

One NFL general manager feels the Saints will deal Howard to try and acquire a proven wide receiver or a starter on the defensive side of the ball.

\"I really believe the Saints will franchise Darren Howard and then deal him off,\" the AFC general manager said. \"Darren’s a real good player. Now he does have a series of injuries that would have me questioning his health, but when at full strength, he’s a real good NFL starter. Charles Grant has the makings of a Pro-Bowl performer and Will Smith is a real talent also. So it would be hard to justify $7.8 million for him unless you move him inside and I don’t believe he is built to play that spot. He’s an end and while he can give you some quality time inside, that’s not his best position and I doubt he could hold up to the every-game grind at tackle. I know they have Joe Horn and he’s a real good wide receiver, but to be honest Donté Stallworth looks like a tease player and this team needs a big, sturdy receiver that can work the inside routes. If they can’t get an end like that for Howard, then get a quality starter at outside linebacker or at free safety and maybe a draft choice.\"

AP reports Bucs GM Bruce Allen has to trim $14-million from the payroll in about 14 days. Where does he begin? Like most teams, at quarterback. Veteran QB Brad Johnson, who has an $8.55-million salary-cap value in 2005, will move on. When Johnson is released, he will save the Bucs about $4.5-million. The Bucs want QB Brian Griese back, but they may not view him as a long-term answer. Allen and agent Ralph Cindrich have swapped several proposals and more talks are planned. If the Bucs are successful in reworking the deal for Griese, who is owed a $6-million roster bonus in March and a $2-million base salary, they easily could reduce the cap space taken up by their starter. If the whole deal falls through, that\'s about $7-million erased from the cap and an enormous problem for the Bucs. CB Mario Edwards looks like a certain cap casualty. He\'s owed a $1.6-million roster bonus on March 1, which would increase his value to more than $3.3-million, too much for a player who couldn\'t secure the nickelback position, having lost it at one point to Torrie Cox. The player everyone asks about is FB Mike Alstott. He is owed $2-million, and given his ever-diminishing role, looked like a certain goner. The Bucs, however, remember the beating they took for cutting S John Lynch, who made the Pro Bowl as a Bronco. And they don\'t want to repeat it with Alstott, perhaps the most popular player in team history. Second, Alstott is willing to take a pay cut to finish his career in Tampa Bay. He likely will get just over the veteran minimum, say $1-million, to stay. If he has a good preseason and makes the team, great. If not, he retires a Buccaneer. It\'s hard to see the Bucs keeping LB Ian Gold. He fired his agent, Karl Poston. He proved his surgically repaired knee is sound, but he wants to return to weakside linebacker, his natural position. By keeping Gold, a large bonus after the \'05 season kicks in. LB Derrick Brooks will have to restructure his contract eventually because his cap figure exceeds $9.5-million next season. The Bucs can find another strongside linebacker. DE Greg Spires is on the books for $3-million next season. But he and agent Drew Rosenhaus believe Spires has a verbal agreement with the Bucs that he can become an unrestricted free agent if a restructured deal cannot be worked out. If he hits the market, there\'s some more room for Allen.

how come no other posts added here guys?
-------
The Dolphins are expected to guarantee some or all of a $5 million roster bonus to wide receiver Chris Chambers in the next few days. The team can free up to $4 million in salary cap space for next season. The bonus is due in early March.
--------
Plummer could become a free agent March 2 if the Broncos choose not to exercise a $6 million option/buyout. By exercising that clause, the final three years of the quarterback\'s deal through the 2009 season are scheduled to kick in. Instead, the two sides are closing in on a compromise agreement. The Broncos already have agreed to cap-saving deals with center Tom Nalen and wide receiver Rod Smith, and are talking to the agent for tight end Dwayne Carswell about the same thing. The team also hopes it can work out a contract extension with left tackle Matt Lepsis that should provide further cap relief. Besides that, representatives for running back Reuben Droughns and Trevor Pryce are seeking trades. Even without those deals getting done quickly, Sundquist predicted the Broncos will be able to be somewhat active in free agency beyond re-signing their own players. The final year of defensive tackle Ellis Johnson\'s contract voids Friday, making him a free agent. Johnson wants to explore the market to see if there\'s interest closer to his Indianapolis home, but he hasn\'t ruled out a return to Denver, where he had 24 tackles, three sacks and an interception in 13 games.
------
Jets veteran middle linebacker Sam Cowart, who lost his starting job to rookie Jonathan Vilma after suffering a sprained left knee in Week 2, has asked the club to trade or release him, a team official said yesterday.

The agent for Jay Williams said he has requested the team release Williams on Tuesday after declining a request by the team to restructure Williams\' contract.

\'\'We\'ll see what happens,\'\' agent Ron Del Duca said. ``[Williams] would stay if we could get creative, but I feel he is not part of [new coach Nick Saban\'s] plans.\'\'

Williams was due a roster bonus of $400,000 in March and a base salary of $900,000 for the 2005 season. The Dolphins will save $1.3 million if they release him.

Williams had already restructured the contract before the 2004 season.

Williams, who has played in 130 consecutive games, has been an effective backup at both defensive end and tackle for the past three years, getting 10 ½ sacks during that time. That included a career-high six in 2002.

Jones says Cowboys will dive into free-agent pool

By Jennifer Floyd Engel

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING - Owner Jerry Jones promised Thursday that the Cowboys would dive into free agency like an offensive lineman into a pepperoni pizza.

\"I am very committed personally to not have a repeat of last year,\" Jones declared. \"We will be more aggressive in free agency than we were last year.\"

One of the areas of aggression is likely to be quarterback. Not only did Jones sound unconvinced that second-year quarterback Drew Henson is ready to be a starter, he did not appear inclined to rush him or third-year man Tony Romo, either.

\"I know if you look at most quarterback situations and really study it, you\'ll see that it takes a lot longer than usually a couple of seasons in the NFL to get where you want them to go,\" Jones said. \"The question is, you have to start that journey sometime, do you lose the fort trying to get there? I don\'t believe that\'s the case.

\"We just can\'t bet the house on how the two young guys are evolving. That\'s just not smart.\"

While Jones said NFL rules forbid him from talking specifically about the Cowboys\' interest in quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who will be waived by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, he made it clear that the Cowboys are in the market for a veteran quarterback. Possibly as a starter.

Still, while giving his \"bet the house\" analogy in one breath, Jones also allowed that Henson might play in 2005.

\"Certainly, under the right, certain circumstances, I think a young quarterback can play here next year,\" Jones said. \"It will have a lot to do with how good we are feeling about the quarterback.\"

How exactly the Cowboys feel about Henson is a whole different issue. They did not send him to NFL Europe, choosing instead to let him train with the Cowboys coaches this off-season. Jones said those workouts have been going well.

Of course, flashing potential in off-season workouts is a far cry from making coach Bill Parcells amenable to starting Henson in 2005.

For his part, Jones said he still believes Henson can be a franchise quarterback.

\"I\'m not backing off of it in any way,\" Jones said. \"I think he certainly has the potential to be a future starting quarterback for the Cowboys or another team.\"

If that\'s the case, the Cowboys might have trouble signing Bledsoe. Bledsoe said Wednesday, \"I just don\'t see myself ever being a backup in this league.\"

Bledsoe played for Parcells in New England and called reuniting with him an \"interesting option,\" so a simple talk might help clear any hurdles. If not, the Cowboys have Vinny Testaverde as a fall-back option.

Jones said he has not talked to Testaverde\'s agent, Mike Azzarelli. Azzarelli said Thursday he has had conversations with the Cowboys about re-signing his client. And while Azzarelli characterized the talks as \"meaningful discussions,\" neither he nor Jones said they foresee getting anything done before free agency begins on March 2.

Whatever the Cowboys decide to do at quarterback, Jones insisted that having a quarterback in place is not a prerequisite for being aggressive in free agency this time around.

The Cowboys were conservative last off-season, and it cost them. They say they will not make that mistake again.

\"It won\'t necessarily be a signal that we are or are not buying into building the supporting cast without the quarterback,\" Jones said. \"We\'re just going to be more aggressive in free agency than we were last year, and I think it\'s because we\'re going to have the opportunity to be.\"

Not only do the Cowboys have two first-round draft choices, they also have almost $20 million available under the salary cap.

Parcells\' mantra that the players around the quarterback are more important than the quarterback is going to be tested. The Cowboys\' list of needs is long, especially with the team considering a switch to the 3-4 defense. They need a defensive tackle, a defensive end and possibly a big linebacker, a cornerback, a safety, offensive line help, a speed receiver and a quarterback.

\"We\'re just looking at every way we can to improve our team,\" Jones said.

Briefly

• Jerry Jones said he is seriously considering trading one of the Cowboys\' first-round draft choices. They own the 11th and 20th picks.
