smoot definitely out there now-
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  The unprecedented size of the franchise tag for cornerbacks, announced yesterday at the NFL Players Association's annual news conference, ensures the Washington Redskins won't place the tag on cornerback Fred Smoot. It wasn't clear in recent weeks how seriously the Redskins considered the option as team officials played coy and coach Joe Gibbs repeatedly said such discussions were yet to be held. However, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said last night Smoot definitely won't get the tag at a record $8.816 million. 8.8mil for cb's!? my how the world has changed, rb's are 6mil this year. |

Gives us a decent shot at Smoot. What if we pulled a trade with the Redskins like Denver did for Portis? Give them Howard after we tag him, and the Redskins give us Smoot and a pick. But that would be their 1 and 2 corners gone in consec years. Kinda shows what not managing the cap does to your team. Maybe Samari Rolle could be a cheaper option.

coming in from the draft smoot wanted to prove something-i don\' t think it would be wise to pick him up for that type of contract.

If we were to get him, we would not pay him that much. He has NO contract right now, so there is no \"type\" of contract to pick up at this point. If he were to be an ass and demand a lot, we can just say no thank you and not do the trade. But just like Portis and Bailey, an agreement will be made on salary before the trade ever goes through, if it goes through.

I\'d be happy to have Smoot, but that type of contract is simply ridiculous. He\'s a good corner, but not nearly worth what he\'s demanding.
Ask yourself how often you sat around wishing we had Fred Smoot on our squad before he became a free agent. He\'s not that great ... he\'s simply the biggest FA name out there. And, because of that, someone will no doubt overpay for him (remember Grant Wistrom last year?). I don\'t want us to be the team who overpays. But, this adds intrigue to the Darren Howard situation. I don\'t think there are alot of top notch, young pass rushers on the FA block this year. We might score big if we\'re willing to deal a bit. |

It didn\'t say Smoot was asking for that much, it said that is what he would get paid if he is franchised. A deal can be worked out for less than what the franchise mark would be, which is what hopefully we would be able to do by trading Howard to them. If he wants anywhere near that neighborhood though, like I said hell no and we try for Samari Rolle.

well it would depend on what we could sign him for and i think we can look at that after horn and deuce. if we could do something with howard for him and get him into a decent contract it would be worth it. but not for 8 milion a year. now i know thats not what hes asking but hes going to get close to that from someone. i just dont think you pay that for the guy
