Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
Thought this was interesting. The "simplified defense" in New Orleans has been beat to death but when you start to hear about it's difficulties from players who've left....
Tyrunn Walker impressing in Detroit Lions defensive tackle battle - Detroit Lions Blog - ESPN Tyrunn Walker showed up at the Detroit Lions practice facility in April a little lost. The reasoning was simple. When Walker played in New Orleans, he was in a system that focused more on reading what the offensive line might do and plugging up holes so linebackers could make plays. In Detroit, all the defensive line does is attack. It led to confusion. Walker knew Detroit liked to attack. He didn't realize how much the Lions did with their front four. "When we first came out here and I first started doing it, it was like, 'Oh man,'" Walker said. "That's like a kid learning how to walk. It's the same thing." "He'd always been told to get a little bit more weight back, get a little wider in your stance and mirror some of the guards," Lions defensive line coach Kris Kocurek said. "We're asking him to narrow your stance down, get as much weight forward as you can and get into them guards as fast as you can. "About halfway through OTAs, you saw it, the light switch like, 'Hey, I can do this, you know.' Then he started out camp and been nothing but getting better." |

Re: Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
I've always said it. Let the defense attack. Let them hit people. Get nasty. How many times do you hear how the Saints secondary was confused? How there was a miscommunication? Of course, with Lewis and Browner, I expect more man type coverages. Hopefully it will free everybody up to make plays instead of reacting to plays.

Re: Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
The 43 Flex is the worst defense if you don't have smart players or the right coach to teach it. It's a very complicated "read first, react 2nd" kind of defense, and the D players have to possess good instincts and split second timing. Tom Landry invented the Flex, and he was a master at teaching and communicating. I have a feeling that RR doesn't possess those same teaching skills, and that's why we've struggled. I would love to see us move to a more attacking style defense where we can utilize our young player's natural speed and athletic ability.

Rob? I will wait till this simplified version takes the field for real. I am giving him another chance.
read and react has never been favorite of mine. kinda like playing prevent all game long with the DL. Playing with fear and doubt before the game even begins. I can see why some player got frustrated as the season went on. maintain your gap assignment is all a DL should worry about. Take the head off the player with the ball is second. Tyrunn Walker is one FA i still think we should have never let him walk. |

Re: Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
If our D played nearly the way Detroit plays, we would win a lot of games. The 4-3 flex we run sucks.. Read and react D gives the O the advantage. If this scheme doesn't work this season, fire every coach on the D and reload to a 3-4 ,we are only missing a stud nose to make the D strong in a 3-4.

Re: Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
I hope RR learned from last year. And I hope this new "simplified" defense is a scheme that attacks. Last year was awful. With the secondary we have we should be able to just let the corners man up and the defensive line should be able to just go get the QB.
If the scheme turns into that "bend don't break" garbage again its going to be a long season. |

Re: Tyrunn Walker flourishing in Detroit
Attack hard.......no read and react. That puts you behind the eight ball before kickoff.
