New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Aug. 11, albeit on a limited basis.

It had been more than a month since Spiller did anything in practice beyond work on the side with trainers, but Saints coach Sean Payton said he wasn't worried he would be too far behind because of his early training camp snaps.

"When you look at CJ and (Dannell) Ellerbe and a few of these guys, they got training camp work, so he's up to speed," Payton said. "It'll be a little different transition as we go through with Jairus (Byrd) compared to Keenan or Spiller for that matter."

Cool Re: Sean Payton: Running back C.J. Spiller won't take long to get up to speed

Half speed would probably be better than what we got on the ground against the Cardinals....

I just don't see how he could do MORE than Ingram or Robinson. Plus, I fear it will start the whole one back per play rotation again. Ingram and Robinson need to get in the flow. Get a rhythm.

Re: Sean Payton: Running back C.J. Spiller won't take long to get up to speed

I'm too lazy to spend hours on Rotoworld looking up old news stories and confirming every example of this, but historically in the past for the Saints when injured guys return to practice, they usually show up on the game field the next week after they come back, not the same week they immediately return to practice. There are tons of examples of this. I expect Spiller will most likely be back for the Panthers game. Would be really surprising to see him out there Sunday.

The Saints generally do not do the classic Dwight Freeney thing of surprising other teams with injured players returning suddenly, when they aren't expected to play. I can't think of ONE example where we ever did that to another team, surprised them with somebody unexpected, like what happened with Dwight Freeney on the Cowboys against us in '09. Payton always tries so hard to play his injuries so close to the vest, that it winds up being completely transparent to figure out what's going on.

You mean Demarcus Ware coming back from neck injury to destroy the Saints' O-line?!

Yeah that. Brain fart. My bad. Demarcus Ware when nobody thought he was going to play and he wound up having such a great game. Still never seems like the Saints surprise anybody when it comes to people coming back from injuries.
