It's Time to End the Trade Brees Talk
Brees will not nor can he be traded this season. Let's end the talk of it now.
Here are the reasons he won't be. 1. He's hurt. Let that sink in. He's injured. Until he plays a game and shows teams he can throw the ball with the same accuracy, zip, and quick release he is known for, no one is giving up anything for him. Teams are not going to give value for an injured player. Sure teams like Pittsburgh and Dallas could use a QB to replace their injurd starters, but guess what Brees has in common with Romo? That's right, neither is healthy. 2. Only teams with no long term options can or would offer anything of value. Let's assume Brees's shoulder heals and he's healthy enough to play by week five. Would Dallas trade for him? The answer is still no. They expect their QB1 back by week 11 (6 games from now.) They cannot afford both players, so while they might take a flyer- they wouldn't give multiple high round picks. Neither would the Steelers. So, the teams you could shop him to are teams without a QB signed to a big deal- and the problem with those teams is they may be in the same boat as the Saints. 3. His contract makes trading him nearly impossible. Brees's salary is 20 million for this season. That means any team trading for him would have to assume the remaining portion of that as a cap hit. NFL rules, unlike MLB, prohibit teams from picking up a portion of it. So, if Brees were traded after week 4, the receiving team would pick up 15 million cap hit. The teams with 15 million in cap space are Oakland, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Jacksonville. Wait until week 6 and you could add Tampa to that list. There isn't practically a team who could absorb the hit prior to the trading deadline. 4. The best value the Saints could get would be a mid round pick. Even if a team could restructure to fit him, and it would be difficult, his age and contract would decrease what a team would pay. Think a fourth or fifth round pick..and maybe only one. Teams will pay a premium in picks and money for a young stud player, and aging players they might pay one or the other, but not both. Since acquiring Brees is already a premium in dollars, the picks would not be there. In addition, his age and injury concerns further complicate things. Brees will finish this season with the Saints. Stop the trade talk. It ain't gonna happen. |
