'Trade' of Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn't be shock, Adam Schefter writes
Technically, write Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the NFL doesn't allow coaches to be traded. But the league does allow teams to negotiate compensation for releasing a coach from his contract.
That has happened at least four times since 1997, including the memorable saga in 2000 when the New England Patriots sent three draft picks to the New York Jets to extricate Bill Belichick from his contract. 'Trade' of Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn't be shock, Adam Schefter writes | NOLA.com |

Well they have to write something. SP is prime meat right now and may be the motivation he needs to be the old Juicy Fruit Coach of days gone by.

1997 Bill Parcels leaves the Patriots in favor of the Jets
The Jets sent four draft picks,3 including a 1999 first-rounder, to the Patriots in exchange for the rights to Parcells. 1997 - 3rd and a 4th 1998 - 2nd 1999 - 1st Belichick, contract expired after the 1997 Super Bowl, joined him days later. Add insult to injury Curtis Martin leaves the Jets for the pats. so that is yet another first round pick they received. just info now go the whole 9 yards and trade drew he was to be worth 3 picks one would think 3 first 3 seconds and 3 thirds and the results might just be: the saints tank their drafts and attendance falls through the floor. In year four the mega trade the Antonio Saints are born. |

Re: 'Trade' of Saints coach Sean Payton wouldn't be shock, Adam Schefter writes
The timing isn't right.
Tom Benson does not care one bit about Payton's $8 million a year salary. Benson's made it clear, it's his money, he will keep saving it or burning it, fast or slow, any d--n way he wants. But if the day comes when someone else (or someones) is in charge of the team, that person (or persons) might really want to unload that $8 million a year coaching contract to another team, and hire someone cheaper to coach, for like $4 million a year. Because $4 million saved is a LOT of money, to people who are squabbling over the money, but it's not really a lot of money to the person (Tom Benson) who's made tons and tons of the money over the years. So I don't see this move making any sense from TB's perspective, if people are still squabbling over his money. Never mind about the coaching or wins and losses right now -- this move would be just giving the kids and fam more cash to squabble over. Terrible idea from a business perspective. |

Give me a #1 and you can have him. Sign a defensive minded assistant coach like Ray Horton, Matt Patricia, John Pagano, Keith Butler, Mike Singletary or Paul Guenther. Let Brees run the offense.
