Our Defense
Finally came to play. Good job and I don't think Browner had a penalty tonight, thats a miracle in itself.

A few weeks ago everyone was crowning Julio as the best receiver in the league Breaux completely took him out of the game. |
Re: Our Defense
Every non contested catch Julio caught, I was like why they place Breaux in zone coverage. Breaux need to start catching those near interception, my count he had 2 drops. Overall he played a great game.
Browner need to play zone cause anything over 15 yards he getting burned. When swann comeback browner snap count should drop |

How the defense played at the end I think the beast has awaken. Kikaha and Jordan was unblock-able

The pressure on Matty Lice was scary. Skid Britches made an appearance. |
Re: Our Defense
beginning of the game scared me that Lewis and browner were listed as the starters. I thought for sure they were gonna play Lewis or browner over Julio. Lewis have enough speed and experience to play Julio but not the physicality. Browner have the physicality but not the speed to stay with him. Breaux have the physicality and the speed just not the experience, he got that tonight and he gonna be a younger version of darrelle Revis. We have a shutdown corner

Re: Our Defense
I must eat crow on ellerbe cause I didn't think he was worth the trade with Miami, the guy is a beast
|
Re: Our Defense
I thought Julio was hurt and wasn't going to play. Just glad Tony Gonzalez
retired doesn't look like they have found a replacement for him. |

Re: Our Defense
Any Breaux doubters still out there?....anybody?...no? Didn't think so. This guy is the 100% real deal folks. And he's only a rookie to this league. He isn't perfect all the time and he catches a lot of undue flack when he makes a mistake, but if he were any other "traditional" rookie no one would even bat an eye at it. Meanwhile he just gets better and better with every week that passes. We got unbelievably lucky to have snatched him up before someone else did. Can't wait to see what he's gonna be like when he really masters playing DB in the NFL.

Re: Our Defense
Michael Irvin finally got something right;
The Falcons didn't do it themselves, the Saints forced all those errors! |
Re: Our Defense
Pre-game, RR said that defence was "That close" to having a breakout performance, looks like he was right, at least for tonights game.
Hope this continues for the rest of the season! GEAUX SAINTS!!!! |
Re: Our Defense
Coverage was better because pressure was better.
Their running game gaped us. Freeman averaged 9 and Coleman averaged 10. That's terrible. The turnovers got us over. Glad for it. Breaux played well. Even made a play on the ball; a couple of plays on the ball. I guess Ryan heard me and threw the cat fighting strategy out the window. Great win! Dallas and Atlanta...Can't think of a better 2 to win. |

Its really hard to win ballgames when you turn the ball over. |
Re: Our Defense
Seriously, if Breaux continues to improve, I think we are seeing the making of an elite all pro corner.

Re: Our Defense
Yeah the defense didn't really look very good in the first half. The two turnovers were a huge help, but one of them was a butt fumble by the center.
The second half was a completely different story. The pressure suddenly showed up for the first time all season, and it looked like our DB's were playing up closer. Those throws in the middle of the field where no defenders could even be seen against the Eagles, I was seeing a lot of bodies around the ball this time. That's what's been so frustrating to watch. It always looks like they're trying to trick people out there, and they end up fooling themselves instead. It seemed like coming off of a butt kicking finally convinced this staff to just play a little more straight up and make the quarterback have to actually look downfield. Breaux, the last two games, has learned to turn his head. He aggravated the crap out of me the first few weeks when all he seemed to do was just lock on to the WR and not make any sort of play on the ball. That's not what people mean when they say lock down corner. It makes all the difference in the world when you actually know where the ball is, and he's playing very well now. |
Re: Our Defense
We definitely can't stop the run with any consistency, still. The big lead kept the Falcons from trying it as much, but when they did, it wasn't very pretty. That's got to be shored up.

Re: Our Defense
I'm ecstatic about the win but we still have tons of work to do on D.

Re: Our Defense
Ellerbe had 13 tackles and 1 assist.
Those are Vilma like numbers. Good game for Ellerbe. Hope he's OK. |

I thought Cam Jordan played extremely well last night.

Re: Our Defense
Breaux might be the best CB we have had in a long time. Just from what we have seen I would say he is already better than Lewis. He and lewis should start with swann as the NB. Browner needs to be religated to special assignments or converted to a SS.

I'd said this before but teams better get us THIS YEAR. I see a lot of promise at the cornerback, DE & LB positions. Don't forget PJ Williams will be back next year :bng:. |

Re: Our Defense
a win is win no matter how you get it
breakout defense? nope not going there breakout performance by a few players? yep we still have a long way to go. 150 rushing 263 passing total of 413 but if the falclowns want to gift wrap a win I will take it. we did it more than once this year so it is a bout time the ball bounced our way. But what the heck I be very very happy today |
Re: Our Defense
Yeah the yardage is worrisome on one hand but the other hand says "scoreboard". The yardage is irrelevant if the opposing team can't put up points.

When the Saints don't turn the ball over, they are competitive.

Re: Our Defense
Exceptional night of play by Jordan, Ellerbe, and Breaux. Other guys like K. Williams, Browner and Kikaha has solid efforts. Maybe it's just me but I didn't see much of Byrd or Vaccaro unless it was half hearted efforts on tackles. Perhaps they were helping foil the downfield passing game and they were effective by escaping direct play notice.
I thought it was one of Anthony's worst games. He got washed in a lot of runs and had some poor tackling technique. Jenkins showed good effort but his technique is real sloppy. Ellerbe is a massive upgrade from Hawthorne. I hope he returns quick. Yardage was a concern but like Rob Ryan said, pieces are positioning where you can see improvement at times. There is enough talent to be a middle of the pack defense and not a bottom feeder. A whole lot of future promise in the secondary with Breaux, Swann and someday PJ Williams part of the mix. |

Yea, I even heard Vaccarro was sending telekinetic messages to their center to force him to snap the ball into his own leg. Seriously, though, great defensive performance. Reminded me of our opportunistic '09 def. Breaux is the sh** Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The yardage numbers do suck, however a lot of that came in junk time. I think it's important to remember ATL was arguably the best offense coming in to this game and our D played well enough. We are still lacking the consistency to be great but you can see flashes occasionally. |
Re: Our Defense
265 of those yards came in the first half. It was not good. You could see the DB's were playing up much closer in the second half, which eliminated a lot of the easy throws, and from there Julio and Roddy weren't able to beat our corners deep.
I have always hated zone coverage's and all the other "scheme's" that not only we play, but so many teams nowadays are doing. Everyone is afraid to get beat deep, so they think it's ok to slowly bleed to death. At least if you give up quick drives, you might not be as tired throughout the game. You can only make zone kind of work if you have a dominant front 7. We do not. And even those who do, still should not be playing zone unless it's third and long. That adjustment in the second half just highlighted the reason why Rob is so frustrating. What took him so long to figure it out? I don't know how many games this team can win, but you have to be aggressive if you hope to have a chance. |
