no, wrong.
The kicker can mess up outside 40 yards, and in bad conditions.
He is not, however, allowed to miss extra points, in indoor stadiums.

Unless the snap is way too high that the holder can't get it down in time which is exactly what happened.

This is true. My son was a holder and it was all timing over placement and "string" position. The whole play is a three part process with the snap, the catch and hold, and the kick. Any variance in any of those areas can cause a miss.
