Don't eat the cheese...

I don't mean to be a downer after a big road. Prior to the season, we all expected a tough time and probably loss in Indy given the hype surrounding them.

It was a great win, and things are looking up, but we still have lots of holes on both sides of the ball.

And worst of all, we dug ourselves a VERY deep hole. Right now we're only back up to a little better than a 1 in 6 chance of the playoffs.

NFC Playoff Picture

Between Carolina and Atlanta, it is hard to imagine BOTH of them cratering, so the division is likely out of reach.

That leaves us fighting for a wildcard and there are a bunch of teams ahead of us in that race:

Falcons 6-1
Vikings 4-2
Rams 3-3
Seahawks 3-4 (better NFC record)
Redskins 3-4 (better NFC record)
Eagles 3-4 (have head to head win over us)

We have to pass up 5 of those 6 teams and stay ahead of those we are already ahead of (DAL, TB, CHI, SF, DET) to be the 6th seed. TALL ORDER.

I have a sneaking suspicion that loss to Tampa in week 2 will be the deciding game against us... Typical Saints luck.

For now I'm enjoying the small victories - some sacks and turnovers - and not looking big picture (at least not seriously). Hope the players are doing the same because we can't say the corner on this season has been turned yet...

we are not a playoff caliber team, but we are one hell of a spoiler. Loving every minute of it.

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

We have the largest turnover of players this season with 25 new faces

I believe 15-18 of them are rookies, sure we may not be a playoff team this year but the growth they are showing from being thrown into the fire is immense in my opinion.

Our defense could well a truly be a force moving forward, those rookies might just save Rob Ryan's job.

Crazier things have happened. We are going to on that list.

It ain't over until it's over... We have a pretty favorable schedule, so let's play the games and see how it all shapes up...

I am not going to think playoffs till continuity between the offense and defense (7 wins in a row)

I agree about the favorable schedule. Only thing is that the Falcons and Panthers pretty much have the same...

It ain't over until the fat lady sings, I don't see Helga warming up so they still have a chance, just sweep Atlanta that's all I ask

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

Well I think the vast majority of us knows this team is very young and getting better by the week. Especially on the D side of the ball. Considering the way the season started I would consider anything from 7-9 to 9-7 a success this year. But, yea, anything can happen and these youngsters could start overachieving and go on a tear and end up in the playoffs. Who knows.

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

I'm not going to say they are going to the playoffs. I do see how much they have improved and hope will continue to improve. If they save their season that would be an accomplishment after the start they had.

there's nothing incorrect about your post. We have a long way to go, but at least it was better than the frigan Eagles game

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

YEa yesterdays game was cool and all and felt good to at least get a win but it showed we still do not know how to close games. It took us jumping in front of a bad team by 20 points to win that game. It was a lot closer than people seem to think.

I do see improvement but dont kid yourself this is not a playoff team. What you saw yesterday will be our season. We will win some games against bad teams and get to see some rookies develop and get to see improvement. Its just not enough to start thinking playoffs this year.

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

The big picture is looking at next year. I like what I saw but for us to make the playoffs we'll have to go 10-6 at a minimum, that is doable the problem is we aren't going to do much from the 6th seed. Very long shot to make it at all.

Most disappointing is Drew getting hurt. I bet if he was healthy we win the tampa game and Carolina game. 5-2 would be much better than 3-4...

We couldn't have jumped out in front of a bad team by 20 at all a few weeks ago. Definitely we are showing improvement. That's what I'm geared for this season, and I assure you all I'll be thrilled if this team finishes better than .500. I'm not indicting them. As I've said, we are learning, and our future is bright, and I'll be the first in line at the crow bar if necessary, but we're a long way from being a playoff team.

Next test will be the G-Men who aren't exactly lighting the world on fire either. I think our momentum will take us through at home.

That Carolina game IMO is difference between 3-4 and 4-3 right now. I honestly didnt think we have a chance of winning but apparently we did and almost won without Brees, that stings and may sting more later in the season.

Defense giving up way to many yds. Turnovers are great but the games we do not have that, likely lose. If they were in the middle of the pack I could see it but not giving up over 400 yds a game. D is improving but still not there yet.

No doubt. Long way to go but we will get there... eventually.

That is a true statement -- since the Germans never bombed Pearl Harbor.

Re: Don't eat the cheese...

Regarding this standings

Falcons 6-1
Vikings 4-2
Rams 3-3
Seahawks 3-4 (better NFC record)
Redskins 3-4 (better NFC record)
Eagles 3-4 (have head to head win over us)

I won't bring up Atlanta. But the vikings and rams have to play each other after this week. Which I am expecting Minnesota to win. But I think Minnesota loses this week to Chicago taking them to 5-3. StL will probably beat SF, before losing to Minnesota taking them to 4-4. And if that's not enough Minnesota has to go on the road against the improved raiders offense(they look good), at home against a likely undefeated or 1 loss packers' team followed by a road game at Atlanta. St.Louis has Chicago week 10 at home before taking back to back road trips at Baltimore and Cincinatti, a rematch with Arizona, and the last two games on the road at Seattle and SF. I see 3 losses in this.

Redskins are not really good. They've beaten a division rival, benefitted being at home back to back beating St.Louis, and won against TB. They have NE after the bye week, then us, followed by road game at Carolina and a two home division slate against the giants and cowgirls. 3-4 will turn into 3-5 and even if they beat us by week 14 they at best would be .500 with 6 losses. Eagles, they are about to go on a run that will stop at NE, I don't expect them to beat Buffalo and Arizona, nor the last game at NJ against the giants.

Now Seattle........they probably might end up turning the corner with Dallas, a bye, and three home game stand but will that be enough for them to go into Minnesota and Baltimore and win both those games back to back? Don't see it. And then there's the last game at Arizona. I am pulling for a loss in that two game road trip.

One week at a time.
One game at a time.
One play at a time.
One tackle, one block, one throw, one catch, one conversion...
Put them all together and get one win, every week.
Everything else takes care of itself.
Just nibble at the cheese.
