Sean Payton: Latest News, Rumors and Speculation on Saints Coach's Future

I want the 2009 Sean Payton back!

Sean has some outs in his deal. If there is an ownership change, he has an out. He has some other outs, too. There would be a lot of interest in him – maybe four or five other teams would be interested. … I don't think he's thinking about it right now. He's not pursuing anything. I think he wants to see what happens like everyone else. But considering everything, if I put a percentage on whether he'd be the Saints coach next year, I'd say [it's] 50-50.

Where does all of these things come from? How do they know that Saints would be inclined to let SP go if he was interested in another team.

It is concerning to think about Tom Benson loosing control of the franchise. I know he is up in age but keeping it within the Benson family would be ideal.

SP has also said he is not going to be firing any coaches just yet. There may be a reason for that. He may be thinking some of them will go with him.

If he goes it would be bitter sweet.

I don't want SP to go anywhere. I remember what it was like before he came and I never want that again. He will get it right. I do feel him if he wants to leave if Benson lost control of the team. If she won that case it would be hard for me but I know as bad as it would be I would still be a SAINTS fan.

I think this rumor has some validity to it.

USC is a top college program. And maybe, like Saban, Payton can no longer force his will on pro-players, but would command 100% attention from College players wanting to go pro.

I have no idea if he can recruit so take it with a grain or two of salt and a shot or two of Tequilla.

do you really see Sean Payton being the kind of person to smooze boosters and lie to recruits? I sure don't

I highly doubt that if Payton did want to leave the Saints would force him to stay. What good is a coach who doesn't want to be here?

At some point you have to listen to what people actually SAY out of their mouths, and stop dealing with all the rampant speculation and guessing.

Payton is a pro baller through and through, and I don't see him going any other way. The college thing is not really like him at all. If you look at his career track, he got out of college coaching ranks as fast as he could, and jumped to the pros the very first chance he got.

How often do you hear Payton say things about PRO BALL in his speeches and comments, like "our game" "at this level" "in this league" or how often he talks about new young players adjusting to "our speed" and "our way of doing things" as opposed to college, how different it is, how much better you have to be, etc. Even when Goodell was dogging him, Payton's statements were STILL all about the shield and RESPECTING the pro game.

Sean Payton actually cares about that stuff.

To me those type of comments and the way he says them, it sounds like someone who is very proud to be there at the pinnacle of the sport (the top level, the NFL, nothing is any bigger than that). He's never said anything I've heard, that makes me think he would have any interest in going backwards professionally, back down to the college level. Other than coaching his son in middle school, which was kind of a funny fluke thing.

He loves pro ball so much, he's enamored with kids of dads who played in the pros, like Ingram, Peat, and Cam Jordan.

Payton played in the pros, he's coached in the pros, he is all about the culture and the NFL locker room. That's why I just don't see this USC thing happening.

They are talking him up, at USC, as a possibility, because they have to go to the boosters and donors and say something, to make it look like they are doing something!

If I had the option to coach a college team like USC, LSU or BAMA versus coaching in the pros; I would be more apt to take the college gig.

Money would be the same, if not better at the college level.

I am not suggesting he should leave, or will leave, but it's a very real possibility.

Don't see him taking a college job until his son is in college. College coaches have much longer hours and traveling having to recruit high school kids which would keep him away from his son even more than now in my opinion.

I thought speculation is why we are all here, what fun would it be if we all spoke the truth and got our facts straight. Rumors are what keeps us going especially after games like when the Titans came to town. I'm thinking most of us are delusional and our favorite drink is Kool-Aid.

Re: Sean Payton: Latest News, Rumors and Speculation on Saints Coach's Future

I just think there aren't many HC jobs (college or pro level), where you are given such and opportunity for continuity, as he has been given here as the Saints HC. Hell even some of our fans are calling for his head. But I believe that Benson has put his full trust and support in Sean. There's a value to that. He was suspended from the league for a year, and what did we do? We put a frikken murial of his face in the damn practice facility. AND THEN KEPT HIS OFFICE WARM AND COZY FOR HIS RETURN!!!!

Sean, this is YOUR team. N.O. brass has given you the keys, for good or for bad. Come on, man... How do you leave that situation? Especially when you aren't going out on top?

So, call me naive, but I just don't see it. Sean's gonna stay. he will turn this team around, and do it again (another SB), even if it's just for spite to all the nay sayers and talking heads. and of course to give a big giant FU to Rodger Dodger, the MFr himself!!!

Salary Cap and Injuries have decimated our team. I'm with you though '73. I don't think Sean is going anywhere. This is his baby, and I'm willing to bet he's less surprised with 4-5 as even we are. He will build it again.

Gotta have that faith!

I agree with you saintfan! Not so long ago this season, we were beginning to wonder where our first win was going to come from!

I would be surprised if we finish on 8-8 this season with the way our defence is playing! :-(

I still have the faith though!! GEAUX SAINTS!!!!

I don't think a college coach, another NFL head coach or NFL OC when he leaves here. He's highly capable at putting together a killer O. A defense not so much .

I do believe he will build it again. If you look at all the moves we made this offseason, you can tell he's trying to improve this team. Browner was not the best decision, but if you remember,we make a strong move to get Jackson from the Texans. The only move I dont like was keeping Rob Ryan. I understand his thinking, but there were better options out there. He really needs to get serious with his coaching staff on the D. Once Bree's is gone,we're gonna need them to step up.

I can see Payton's leaving being more appealing when Drew's time is over as a Saint. It would be the end of their era and a prime time for a fresh start. Unfortunately we are heading that way sooner rather than later, all good things.......
Hopefully, it's not next year.

do people realize that Sean is an UFA in 2018?

Complete cap freeing roster of UFA in 2017 and SP already has an out in 2018 if it all goes south.

SP is no fool

IMO if you pay attention to what he says after losses, especially, I think he might finally be coming around to letting go of some of these crap assistants. I can only think of one he recently said, it was something to the effect of, "if you train a student for a test and they keep failing it, maybe its the teacher". He has said other things similar.

Personally, I want coach to stay. He has got to part ways with his buddies though. We need some new energy and some assistants with some new fresh enthusiasm.
