NEW ORLEANS: Now that head coach Jim Haslett has survived his near-death experience in the Big Easy, and he and general manager Mickey Loomis have sat down and made nice, it's time for the pair to stop treading water and start producing. The Saints' four-game winning streak to end the season saved Haslett's job, which was quite a feat. But it also marked the fourth consecutive non-playoff season in New Orleans. Somehow, Haslett still earned himself a two-year contract extension, through 2008. Go figure.

I still don\'t understand this move by Benson. What has he done that says he deserves two more years on the contract? He\'s lucky you didn\'t fire him this year!

Benson, I hope you were smart enough to put this in as an incentive clause based on making the playoffs or something.

The extension, to me, is basically an apology for calling this a high school team. Anyone can plainly see Haslett did not deserve it, but it is a face saving move. He can\'t simply say \"I am gonna keep Haslett cause I don\'t wanna pay him to fire him.\" It has to seem like he has utmost confidence in him, and what better way than an extension. Just like they are saving Venturi face by not firing him but creating all these colorful new positions to gloss around the fact he has been replaced. I wouldn\'t be surprised if at some point he decides to \"step down.\"
