Franchise Tag Deadline Tuesday, article
AP reports the Jaguars are debating a critical question as they face Tuesday\'s deadline for placing the franchise tag on players for the 2005 season: Do they have a better chance of making a playoff run this year with S Donovin Darius at an expensive price tag, or without him at a salary-cap savings of almost $5 million? Because their playoff chances are probably better with him, chances are good that the Jaguars will tag Darius on Tuesday for the third consecutive season. If he\'s tagged, he\'ll be guaranteed the average salary of the five highest-paid safeties -- $4.97 million -- once he signs the tender. If the Jaguars don\'t tag Darius, who turns 30 on Aug. 12, he\'ll likely leave as a free agent, meaning the Jaguars would get no compensation for him. They\'d also have to plug a hole at strong safety. Deke Cooper can play the position, but Darius\' departure would leave the team with little depth at that position.
There goes one safety if we decide to go the free agency route. There is also Freeman. With Jones being possibly cut, attending our teams need through free agency is looking more likely. That is with the pending cut of Jones, trade of Howard, Pathon release, Riley not being resigned, etc... Looks as if the cap will be around 15 million if this all happens. Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
All little common sense goes a long way. |
