I thought your post was pretty clear in it's intent. You didn't say anything about hypothetical. You were talking about how the Bengals great season is about to go down the tubes. Then you ask the question, if they come asking for Brees, what should Sean do?

I'll answer your revised edition of the question (I say revised because I don't really buy your reasoning behind your original post, quite frankly). IF it were even possible, I think it would not have a chance of happening. They would have to make an offer that is beyond reasonable for their own good. Dalton will be back next year.

You don't trade a guy like Brees until you know who you're replacing him with. Garrett Grayson cannot be viewed as that guy, at this point. So any trade would have to come at a later time, not in the middle of the season.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

You would also have dead money on the salary cap which doesn't help.
Brees' contract has to be extended for any cap help.

Don't forget the most important clause in the "trade."

All the letters that spell New Orleans Saints have to be removed from the alphabet!

Brees is a flop in Cincy and is cut, reclaimed by the Saints who then go undefeated for the next 25 years and cause the collapse of the NFL. Roger of course will have to come crawling to the Saints for a job!! Brees retires at 65 with all the records!!

A rare Hurricane ironically named "Brees" forms in the Great Lakes and "Finishes the job the fire started" in Chicago!!

If this were to happen in this offseason...

Think way bigger than the Herschel Walker-to-Minnesota deal back in the day. That's the only way Brees leaves...it has to be. Brees can still lead a team to the Super Bowl w/an average defense. You can't say that with most NFL starting QBs. The Bengals would have to pay a HUGE price with their future to us for that kind of move.

In other words...ain't gonna happen. From both sides.

So Grayson isn't our guy and we have no candidate to replace Brees...

Thus, we're faced with two options with Brees by that logic...

Pay Brees his due contracted number and take another year of salary cap hell, or...

Extend Brees, if he and his agent are so willing, with guaranteed money, but at a reduced cap number...
