Question for the Forum

Why do the Saints, and other teams, put a player on IR before the last game of the season.

I understand that a team going to the playoffs use that roster spot to sign another player or bring one to the active roster from their practice squad.

The Saints put Spiller on IR and I didn't see a corresponding move from the PS or FA signing.

Thanks for any info

Re: Question for the Forum

I'm not overly sure but I'd guess we are trying to release Spiller with an injury settlement?

And for that maybe the player has to be on IR? if anyone can confirm that would help.

Re: Question for the Forum

There might be some league rule requiring it if player is injured?

To protect your practice squad guys.

We called up a couple players so they can't be poached.

Re: Question for the Forum

It opens the IR settlement window for some
It allows you to get some of the younger players onto the roster to see what you have. that is huge when your backed into a cap corner with no way out

With the way Cadet and Hightower played I doubt Spiller will make it past camp .

Not so fast my friend ...

You can't assume that and a lot of players can look like Cadet after a couple of games. Spiller is an investment (put on your GM cap for a second) & if he is in fact working through an injury as well as learning the playbook, I'll hold off on judgment until camp starts next season.

Spiller could be a "bust" signing here but I ain't buying it .
