Peyton Manning is the only guy I know of who became a free agent in his mid 30's while still being a top tier QB. And because of that, he is the only one at that age who got a mega deal. It worked for a little while, but the last two years he hasn't been close to his old form. That should be a lesson for any team thinking of throwing that kind of money at an aging QB.
But Mannings problem has been mostly related to his neck injury, him losing feeling in his fingertips, and other problems with his throwing arm. His decision making is still there. Age in sport isn't really what it used to be. New ways of nutrition and exercise will have veterans playing longer and longer, especially at the QB position that is more cerebral than physical and where guys doesn't take nearly the punishment as they used to.

I'm sure Joe Montana's decision making is still there as well, but that wasn't exactly my point. If Peyton's neck was the problem then why did it take three years for him to suddenly show the effects? I don't think it was that injury, and I have heard nothing about him losing anymore feeling in his fingers. It's that he is old and his offensive line has faltered, so he's just breaking down. And the same thing is happening with Brees, though Drew has managed to survive so far... he needs better protection, are he won't last much longer. Anyone can have their career ended at any time, as we all know, but when you're older it stands to reason that you break down quicker. I don't buy into all that nutrition stuff. That's good for your heart, but it won't save your bones from getting cracked.

There are rules in place to protect QB's now, but if you don't have protection you're still going to get beat up.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
